Ribadu turned his face elsewhere when there was a damning report from one of his investgators against Bode George. He publicly declared that OBJ was not corrupt only Atiku was as president and vice-president respectively. The various probe panels set up by the House of Rep. have proved the contrary.
Nigerians should allow the current chairperson of the EFCC do her job in peace:She once told the press that she was first contacted to take the job when the commission was about to take off but was denied the job because she chose not to lobby.
The author of the above words has spoken a lot of sense. Let me be as frank and as delicate as possible: It is my considered opinion that the temper of the initiating article of this thread is too extreme to be taken seriously. Its prescriptive stance that would have Mrs. Waziri resign on account of a supposed inability on her part to diligently produce the annual report of the state outfit headed by her must be seen as lacking the minimal basis of sobriety and caution.
In the haste to manufacture grievance against the current EFCC boss, it would appear that some of the pro-Ribadu voices are desperate to find "incriminating" pieces everywhere. Innuendo and outright calumny have in this campaign of sour grapes sadly substituted rational debate. The intention of the writer of the anti-Waziri commentary may not be partisan but one cannot ignore the risk it stands of becoming an instant propaganda weapon in the hands of those reactionary forces whose quest for impunity and political self-preservation was responsible in the first place for the rascality and lawlessness the nation suffered at the hands of the ex-dictator called Obasanjo and his EFCC thug cum errand boy, Nuhu Ribadu.
Under Mrs. Waziri, the EFCC is no longer acting as the loud and grotesquely tyrannical behemoth it once was during the hypocritical and mendacious reign of the cop from Adamawa. Even those who only grudgingly accept that Mrs. Waziri is so far doing a relatively good job ought to acknowledge the fact that democracy and human rights thrive essentially in an environment whereby due process and the rule of law are consciously cultivated as principles of enlightened societal interaction. We help deepen our democracy by repudiating the temptation to impose choices that are apparently less the product of discreet thought than they are the result of perceived slights that are contrived in a legerdemain.
The call for Mrs. Waziri's resignation at this point in time is both ill-advised and superfluous.
P.S. Those wanting to refresh their memory as to the true state of affairs at the EFCC during the Ribadu debacle can read the following commentaries by Aonduna Tondu, that is my humble self: "Driving Nuhu Ribadu Out Of Town" and "Still A Vote Of No Confidence: Why Nuhu Ribadu Must Go". The two documents are available at the website of The Nigerian Village Square and elsewhere in the Nigerian and other media.

Had Farida been the Director of the FBI & failed to produce a report to the Congress there would have been hell to pay. Let's even get closer to home. Had Farida been in the private sector & failed to produce a report to her superiors as at when due, she would have been queried or fired. Go & ask marketers in Banks or salesmen who fail to perform. You are fired or you resign if you fail to meet your target.
Resignation is an alien culture in the Govt, public sector, MDA's & security agencies. That is why mediocrity, tribalism, corruption & nepotism continue to thrive amongst dismal performance, god fatherism, ineptitude & what have you. That's why a lot of people like Mr One Naija have been lulled into saying that calling for her resignation is ill advised & superfluous.
There have been clamors in Rivers State for Gov Amaechi to suspend his "Thief of Staff" Nyesom Wike pending his trial for laundering over 4 Billion Naira. The Rivers state Government is shunning the call & have maintained they are standing by him. Morality like resignation is alien to our culture. If she cant produce a report than what the hell can she do.

My suspicion is that in the past two weeks, the EFCC has cobbled together some kind of report labeled the 2007 Report in which it treats some 2006 issues, and smuggled it into the National Assembly.
[QUOTE] "The less you know, the more you believe" Bono
I told u so. FW has performed, QED. Can we now let her be and "fight corruption" for us?
For your information, no one can fight corruption in Nigeria because Nigeria is founded on corruption and funded by corruption. To eradicate corruption is to uproot the very foundation of Nigeria. And until we make up our minds to uproot that foundation and erect a new Nigeria on its debris, anyone claiming to be fighting corruption or to have fought corruption is a big liar.
Don't let them fool you...

nijalaw,
It seems you need a crash (refresher?) course on both the contemporary institutions of Nigeria and present-day America. By way of example, the "managerial skills" of the various Nigerian banks, as far as meeting "targets" by sales persons of the fair sex is concerned, are nothing to be proud of, if you know what I mean. As for America, go ask the Chief Executive and his national security bosses how they have been trampling on the human rights of innocent citizens ( as well as other beings) today and getting away with it. It is called post-911. The point I'm makinng here is that your examples of moral probity do come across as suspect, that is putting it mildly. That said, let me reiterate that there is no just cause at this point in time to call for Mrs. Waziri's resignation. The EFCC under her is a far cry from what it used to be during the violent, criminal and lawless interregnum of Nuhu Ribadu.

Dude, this thread is not about Nuhu Ribadu. Where is Mr Babafemi and the EFCC Report? If you are interested in comparing and contrasting Farida and Nuhu's era, please, open another thread.

Mr One Naija check the 2 reports from Punch & Thisday Newspapers. The Soothsayers predicted the death of EFCC under Waziri & it has come to pass. I am sure I will not hear from you again. EFCC: No Case against Obasanjo, 31 Ex-Govs
•Ex-president rejects power probe report
By Kingsley Nwezeh and Olaolu Olusina, 10.14.2008
The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mrs. Farida Waziri, has said former President Olusegun Obasanjo and 31 ex-governors, who were investigated by her predecessor, have no prima facie case against them.
She also said the commission has not received any petition against the former President.
Waziri said yesterday in Abuja at the 5th edition of the National Roundtable for Good Governance organised by the Faculty Board of Initiatives of the House of Representatives that EFCC has no case against Obasanjo.
Responding to a question on why in spite of alleged petitions the former president and 31 ex-governors who were declared corrupt by Mallam Nuhu Ribadu were yet to be prosecuted, Waziri said there was nothing in their files with the commission to warrant prosecution.
She said: “Let me tell you truthfully. I got there, what I found is what I am working with. If there is nothing in the case file there is nothing I can do. I do not have 31 case files. There is no prima facie case against them to the best of my knowledge.
“I have not received any petition against President Obasanjo. There is no case file there.”
The EFCC chairman also attributed the inability of the agency to successfully prosecute some of the accused corrupt politicians on the senior lawyers who delay the course of justice by raising judicial technicalities.
Waziri said: "What is happening is, these are people who are rich and they engage the services of SANs (Senior Advocates of Nigeria) and they stall trials by raising jurisdictions. That is why we are calling for special courts. We are really disturbed by these cases.”
Files on ex-governors missing, says EFCC
By John Ameh, Abuja
Published: Tuesday, 14 Oct 2008
The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mrs. Faraday Waziri, on Monday said that the former state governors investigated by the commission were still walking about freely because files on their alleged misdeeds were either “missing or distorted.”
Waziri, who spoke at a national round table on “Millennium Development Goals and Challenges of Anti-Corruption, ”organised by the House of Representatives Faculty Board of Initiatives in Abuja, also said the commission had no evidence against a former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.
Her predecessor, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, had once told the Senate in 2007 that the EFCC had concluded investigations into the corrupt activities of about 31 former and serving governors.
Only a few of the former governors – Chief James Ibori (Delta), Chief Orji Kalu (Abia), Chief Lucky Igbinedion (Edo), Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani (Enugu), Mr. Ayo Fayose (Ekiti), Chief Joshua Dariye (Plateau), Mr. Jolly Nyame (Taraba), Alhaji Saminu Turaki (Jigawa), Mr. Boni Haruna (Adamawa), have since been arraigned by the anti-graft agency.
But at the rountable, Waziri stunned the audience that included the Speaker of the House, Mr. Dimeji Bankole, lawmakers and some governors, when she said, “I don’t have 31 files ( on the former governors); there is no prima-facie case against them.
“It is trite law that we must hear all sides, but here we have distorted files and statements.”
She said that the commission’s predicament was worsened by the unwillingness of people to assist it with vital proof that would have hastened the effort to bring the former governors to justice.
Waziri cited one major bottleneck as the uncooperative attitude of witnesses who refuse to appear in court and testify against those under the EFCC’s watch.
The EFCC chairman also said that she neither met any petition against Obasanjo when she assumed office nor had any been sent to her since she became the head of the commission early this year.
“I am working on what I have found; I have not received any petition against Obasanjo and there is no case file there (at the EFCC’s office),” she stated.
But the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties, disagreed with Waziri when it pointed out that she was merely making excuses.
The CNPP’s representative at the roundtable, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, drew her attention to three petitions the conference sent to the EFCC calling for the probe of Obasanjo’s administration.
Okechukwu said, “We sent petitions to the EFCC, Madam; they are there before you.
“The EFCC didn’t do anything about those petitions. How can you be talking about fighting corruption when you have consistently ignored the petitions we sent to your commission calling for the probe of Obasanjo’s tenure?”
Instead of admitting or denying the claim, Waziri rather spoke elaborately on the agency’s new anti-corruption “proactive” style, which she said was to prevent an act of corruption before it took place.
She explained that ex-public officers had learnt smarter ideas of making the agency’s prosecution and recovery of stolen money more difficult.
She stated that prevention and prosecution of established cases would go hand-in-hand, contrary to the public perception that the EFCC under her, was not interested in arresting and prosecuting suspects.
Waziri defended the agency’s desire to have the Nigerian Civil Forfeiture bill passed by the National Assembly to empower the agency to confiscate the assets of public officers protected by immunity even while in office.
She told the gathering that the commission was already turning its searchlight on state and local governments as a mark of its concern over how the billions of naira allocated monthly to them from the Federation Account were utilised.
She said, “Enough is enough; we are also communicating the MDAs (ministries, departments and agencies) to provide us with the list of companies they have awarded contracts.
“We are checking whether the companies are registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission. We want to know so that if there is a problem with a particular contract, we can begin to ask the right questions immediately.
“We hope that together, we will win the war against corruption.”
Bankole, in his remarks, observed that the collapse of basic infrastructure in the country was a testimony to the fact that the funds appropriated over the years to revive them were “diverted into private pockets or stolen.”
The speaker noted that the revelations that came out of the probe of the power sector by the House and the ongoing investigations of the oil sector had told the story of how the country had been run aground.
He, therefore, urged the Presidency to summon the courage to implement the reports on the various probes by the House when debated and passed over to it.
Bankole also appealed to Nigerians to ask questions on the status of unspent funds held by states and local governments.
He said, “Nigeria is facing monumental corruption; this year, we recovered about N450bn unspent funds at the Federal level.
“The question to ask is why have we not had cases of unspent funds from the states and local governments, especially when the two collect about 48 per cent of our allocations?
“If the money appropriated to the power sector had been utilised, we would have gone a long way in achieving the Millennium Development Goals.” |

I suggest that you do a "discreet reading" of what the EFCC boss had to say.
You know, this question of disappearing files should not come to us as a surprise. High profile crooks within the brazenly corrupt Nigerian spaces have historically resorted to more criminal tactics in the desperate bid to erase any relevant evidence that would help in nailing them. Remember the numerous cases or arson and unexplained theft of dossiers in federal government institutions where individuals were facing probes of their involvement in crooked deals? And what about the dramatic but tragic assassination of Dele Giwa? At any rate, a few voices, including mine, did warn the Nigerian nation when it became obvious that the pro-Obasanjo thug called Nuhu Ribadu was going to be relieved of his disastrous reign of terror at the EFCC. There were credible reports then of files being (re)moved illegally by corrupt EFCC personnel. It is called tampering with evidence. Incredibly, nobody did pay attention to the scandal. That is the dismal situation Mrs. Waziri met when she resumed her commission at the anti-corruption outfit. It is now an even greater challenge to the Nigerian people to redouble their efforts to ensure that crooks in the Obasanjo, Bode George mould don't have the last laughter.
In my two commentaries, "Driving Nuhu Ribadu out of Town" and "Still a Vote of No Confidence: Why Nuhu Ribadu Must Go" (written by Aonduna Tondu), I did suggest in the conclusion that for the EFCC to be effective, the lawless Ribadu as well as the entire personnel under him required to be moved out of the place. The EFCC is badly in need of a surgical transformation to rid it of the rotten and compromised elements that the ex-tyrant and his confederates used in their kleptocratic and tyrannical enterprise. Mrs. Waziri's distress call should be accorded the urgency it requires. Now is not the time to get bogged down in eccentric diversions.

Really in my own opinion I do not see any difference between Ribadu and Waziri as it regards corruption fighting. Both are supporting two different set of thieves. Thieves, that disagrees with each other. While Ribadu went after the thieves (obj didn’t like) with the gusto of a war general with scant regard for civility or decorum, waziri is going after the thieves(UMYA wouldn’t mind) with wayo ‘rule of law’ , which could be settled after a change of heart by UMYA. So the issue of coming out with report of either 2007 or 2008 is missing the point as that is not part of her ‘briefs’. A woman installed with the massive support of Ibori and Saraki would be hard pressed to be interested in proper reporting of her activities as both(ibori and saraki) are not known for transparency in any guise. The way she allowed Imoke disappear should be quite telling.
Like I said and I would repeat again, the election of 2007 has dragged us decades back. It has brought both seen and unseen calamities to the Nigerian polity. I am not and would not be a Ribadu fan for his effort in making that nonsense election a reality and also fighting the attempt of making EFCC independent of the president thereby denying an institution out of EFCC. Waziri is a by-product of the nonsense election as those who benefited from the fraud did not trust Ribadu so they had to bring her in for the job, and she is really ‘delivering’.
What we need in Nigeria is to fight for free and fair method of selecting our leaders while making an institution out of INEC by making it totally independent ditto the judiciary. The modalities of achieving this can be debated. If we can achieve this, then funny characters would not be allowed near anything called corruption fighting as so many unintended pleasant effects would fall into place. The cynicism of Nigerians in the overall concept called Nigeria would be greatly reduced because the leadership would evolve from them and the goodwill that is presently lacking would be restored.
In this I don’t see an alternative.

| Re: Resign, Farida Waziri, Resign!
GBAM!!! As my good friend will say......the rest na tory...

She is alarmed that the files on some of the former governors as well as The Chief Thief, a.k.a. Olusegun Obasanjo, have developed wings and disappeared! The Punch report seems to be quite explicit in that regard.
Mr One Naija, How many months did it take for her to discover the files were missing. You must be really naive or her cousin to say she is sending out an SOS.
Denker got it right Mr Aonduna Tondu Michael Aondakaa you are defending your kin.
I also heard in a radio news report that Babafemi said she was misquoted on the case of the ex-governors missing files.
The EFCC is clearly a bundle of confusion. We now know why she can't submit the 2007 or 2008 report. There are no files in which she can use to come up with a report
Those files conveniently disappeared under her watch.

As the saying goes, when boondogglers like nijalaw have nothing cogent to say, they, in knee-jerk fashion, resort to red herrings, and in this case, the tribe one. What a shame!

That Ribadu acted out Obj's script is too ridiculous to to hear from you.
In your own thinking, he may have acted out Obj's script but pls tell your readers, who and who were founded guilty by Ribadu that were not corrupt and truely not guilty as charged?
If a crook is guilty as charged, would you call it an intimidation? Did Obj ask those that Ribadu investigated and founded guilty to be corrupt?
And how are readers {who already responded} preventing Farida from doing her work?
Readers are only angry that Farida is not doing her job. Were readers angry with Ribadu? NO! Readers were not angry because readers were so pleased that Ribadu was doing great job.
To the best of my knowledge none of the readers you are trying to confront here ever lied about Farida's lousiness.
If for any reason you are uncomfortable with what you are reading about her, then talk to her to do her work. Her train is already running late and readers will not ceased to be angry. Oga Old Soldier make we leave this woman make she do her job.I know u may be unhappy with the system that sent u away from the army but take it easy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

So you are Aonduna Tondu from Madam Waziri, Aondoka and Akume's Benue state? I can now understand why you are writing this nonsense here. Pity.
