| Officer, Arrest Dat Man! ENRAGED by his failure to appear before the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs to defend his Ministry's 2009 budget proposal, the panel yesterday threatened to order the arrest of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ojo Maduekwe, and compel him to do so - The Guardian, Wednesday January 7, 2009 Thank God its a Committee of the House of Representatives contemplating an arrest this time. Often, its worse. The other day, the headlines screamed that Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola personally arrested a yahoo yahoo boy who had gone to play a fast one on him. Before that, Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos state had personally arrested some miscreant somewhere in Lagos. The list of Nigerians having fellow Nigerians arrested by the police can be dizzying: husbands order their wives arrested; concubines have Chiefs or Alhajis other girlfriends arrested; if Madam, the legitimate wife at h... A very interesting piece about how a Nigerian can life difficult for another Nigerian. This is what happen when one is find guilty without any proof. Where bribery is the currency to lock up a poor person; where the rich can equally buy freedom with the same currency.

Who do you think you are? Stop making fun of what makes life wonderful in Nigeria. If not that you are outside my jurisdiction, I would have ordered your immediate arrest. Wetin? I will even arrest your wife.
You think we have never been abroad before? We have been everywhere. We know how it is done abroad. We like it better here. And that is why we are not soaking the cold with you over there in Canada.
Here, as Tony Montana said, the world is ours. So leave that for us, will you? Mind your own business in Ottawa or wherever it is you are.
If not, our boys shall meet you at the airport when next you come home. Yes. If you like, sneak in through the border again. We shall get hold of you and show you pepper.
Then you will really have something to write about. Bad sons.

| Re: Officer, Arrest Dat Man! This is a very funny piece. In Nigeria, many think they are important, utilizing any opportunity to deal ruthlessly with their less fortunate fellow citizens. Ironically, the cabal holding the nation to ransom go about unchallenged.

| Re: Officer, Arrest Dat Man! Pius, this is for you and it's very important o. I have made a phone call to my dear uncle (Obama) in DC concerning your previous and ongoing obnoxious behavior, etc. The next time you show up anywhere in DC, you are in for it.
Your debts to our beloved country Nigeria must be paid. Be ready o.

| Re: Officer, Arrest Dat Man! A nice piece, with all the right sentiments and intentions. Just a little shortcoming; I have never understood this new habit of trying to juxtapose Governor Oyinlola with Governor Fashola. And if you are indicting Oyinlola, you cannot tar Fashola with the same brush. Is this not the same Oyinlola that was governor of Lagos State with military fiat at his disposal and yet did nothing? What has changed about him since then?
In this particular instance I cannot speak for him on this arrest issue, but I can vouch for Governor Fashola. He respects and obeys the law and cannot do anything that runs contrary to the principle of justice. The writer is implying that the arrest Babatunde Fashola made was illegal and oppressive as with the others he has cited. It was not. The governor's convoy was on Eko bridge (without siren) and observed the rule of keeping out of the Bus lane (BRT). A slew of cars violated the rule and the governor ordered his escort to stop them. 16 or so cars were involved and the drivers were charged to court the next day.Where then is the oppression?
The BRT is being understudied by many other countries as an exemplar in the resolution of urban transport problems. Lagosians are unanimous in their acclamation of the system. Rules have been put in place to ensure the efficiency of the system. Can the writer drive with impunity on the bus lane in the UK? Or is the writer one of those who condones recklessness, irresponsibility and disregard for order on the one hand and turns round to complain that things are not working in Nigeria on the other?
Just my observation.
