Anambra! Anambra!! Anambra!!!

How many times I call so. Una ways don tire people. The story of Anambra will fill up the syllabus for Political science for university students as they try to unravel the thinking process in the warped minds or these legislators. I don't envy them and am sure some would curse when the see the volume of the analysis they would have to study to pass those courses.

God help that state and its people.

Thanks for posting Botha's speech. Far from making me upset, it shows how far South Africa has come. In his lifetime Mandela became president. The people he deemed too stupid to rule are ruling. The people he viewed as destined to rule have for the most part accepted the change.

I'm doubtful about whether Botha actually delivered that speech. I googled around for it to find out the occasion on which the speech was delivered and the response to the speech, but all I could find were just sites which reproduced the speech verbatim. I find it hard to believe that such a speech would have been given and not reported by news agencies worldwide.

To All,
I am actually of the opinion and I have mentioned it earlier, that all these impeachments, nullifications and rascality are going to be good for Nigeria's democracy on the long run. What we are witnessing now can be considered the fallout of the various military rule and interruptions to democracy in Nigeria. We are apparently in a discovery process in Nigeria, we are discovering the rule of law all over again, and possibly the rule of compromise and consession. Rules that must be acknowledged for any democratic society to work. (I am still skeptical democracy is the best form of government for Nigeria though).

While the various situations play themselves out, I think we should all be patient and work out how we will all personally partake in Nigeria's progress and development at some point in your life.

No comments on the sayings of the 'groot krookodile' who died recently aged 90. In the mist of his muck are hidden some challenges for the African race. Lizrds cannot be crocodiles. Indeed mobile policeman no be soldierooo.
Dame Etiaba has emerged the first female executive governor. Balonwu and co will come for her after christmas. Reminds of the story of the man whom the nazis came to kill after killing catholics, jews, journalsits etc because when the others were taken, he was not among them.
Well women are know for their extraordinary negotiation and diplomatic skills, maybe she may decide to keep the wolves in cheque by openeing the state treasury for them and allowing the NARTO back into Onitsha. And the music goes on on on on on on on.

It is very unlikely that you will find this speech on the internet even if it was delivered, not because there was no www as somebody said earlier because we can even get speeches from the 14th century on the internet, but because such speeches would not have been delivered in public but in-house to his co-criminals and would have beeen classified as top secret, probably revealed after he left office.

Where the shyte is Arcnitect (Dr.) Alexander EKWUEME (GCON)? Where the fffffffish is Chief Emeka ANYAOKU? Is there no longer any respect for elders in post-Biafra Anambra State? NAwa for Ougadougou! Hi, folks!

Mr Abraxas,
I can't help but wonder at the source of all this apparently very deeply rooted hatred for Anambra State/Ndi-Igbo. For the life of me, I fail to see how your lot or the lot of your relatives will improve just because you hate the guts of people from a certain section of Nigeria even if they are always f#???!* up and have repeatedly failed to live up to expectations. This abundant energy that you expend on feeding your hatred by way of your hate filled, ascerbic and vitriolic comments on all matters relating to Ndi-Igbo can only make you grow more bitter. Haven't you noticed, after all these years that this hatred has not improved your lot. All it does is bring equally potent hate filled jabs your way. The mark of intelligence is not to keep throwing yourself against an unyielding rock. You can only end up hurting yourself at the end of the day. Why don't you try another tack and see if it will bear better fruits. That is what makes us human and separates us from animals.
The point is not that a lot of the so called Igbo leaders are selfish %#%#%#%#%#s, the point is not that they must have had a stunted mental and social development, that is already very painfully obvious. That that, is what helps you get it up is what is baffling. Why, after all these years don't you try a more productive tack, like constructive crictism of your leaders or other Nigerian leaders including Ndi Igbo?
I am not sure that it matters to you but our failure is your failure, be you in Brazil, Bolivia, Guatamela or in Peru. Our success is your success. Anambra is undoutedly a mess, just like the rest of Nigeria, doesn't it bother you? It is really a sad commentary on the state of your existence when the failure of another is the only way you can get it up.

Default Anambra's never-ending Story

UPDATED AT 19.00 GMT
THE GUARDIAN ONLINE.

Etiaba becomes Nigerias first female governor

History was made in Awka on Friday when the former Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Mrs Dame Virgy Etiaba at about 9.50am became the first female governor in Nigeria, having taken the oaths of office and of allegiance administered on her by the State Chief Judge, Justice Chuka Jideofor Okoli. And in a swift reaction, Mr. Peter Obi insisted that he remains the legitimate governor of the State. He claimed that the process leading to his impeachment was riddled with unconstitutionality and illegality and was therefore unacceptable.

Etiaba, dressed in a two piece navy blue-coloured silk skirt and blouse, with a milk coloured decorated hat and pair of leather low-heeled pair of shoes, arrived the Conference Hall of the Government House at 9.42am. She was ushered in with the National Anthem, which set the stage that she must have made up her mind to take over contrary to her position on the issue 24 hours earlier.

The new governor in her emotion-laden inaugural address, admitted she was stepping into the shoes of Obi, not out of desire or design, but because, "the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has beckoned on me, as the Deputy Governor of the State at this point in time, to fill the gap this circumstance has created.

She however pointed out that in doing this, she owes no one or group any allegiance but the state?s electorate. She therefore urged Nigerians to support her with prayers, but warned all individuals and groups to avoid sending her any messages of congratulations or courtesy calls, "as we are not in a celebration mood.
I don't get it...why did she later accept to be Governor, if only 24 hours earlier, she had outrightly rejected the offer? If Obi's removal was UNconstitutional, how in hell is her rising to accept to be Governor of Anambra constitutional?

Lemme guess: She accepted to be Governor so the state doesn't fall into the hands of the opposition PDP? If yes, then by extension she is a party to an illegal process as well. I mean, that is what The Presidency tried to do in Ekiti (and we all cried foul) - before it later backfired when the Assemblymen played a fast one on them.

Perhaps, better Virgy than an emergency administration in Anambra? Maybe..who knows. Nigerian politics is one of the world's most complex.

Auspicious.

I still doubt very much that he made this speech. For one thing, the content of the speech is so shocking that it would have attracted comment and response from people and organisations throughout the world, even if it was released long after he made the speech. After all, you still hear of news agencies reporting on classified documents that have been released years after the events they refer to have passed. And I'm extremely sceptical of reports that don't have independent verification but are reproduced verbatim on several sites - this is what made me suspicious of Emeagwali's claims to begin with.

Hmm. You have good points there; thinking about it, there is a very good chance that Botha didn't make the speech attributed to him. I reacted to the content of the supposed Botha speech because I think it shows how someone can draw all the wrong conclusions from a small kernel of truth and lead people astray.

It's the reason I'm fascinated and repulsed by US Republicans: they've mastered that art of using a small truth to get people to conclude that life is death and rich is poor. I have never seen a group more able to get working and middle class people to vote against their own economic and social self-interests and vote for the rights of the rich. I dread the day we get politicians that sophisticated in Nigeria (politicians who don't need to rig elections because they can convince the people that red is green and empty is full).

O ri yen so o, Techsista! (You hit the nail on the head there!). They have also mastered the art of capitalizing on small misyarns and twisting same completely out of context to suit their purpose..and poor John Kerry has made himself target practise for them. As for Naija, there is nothing like issues-based debate - the politician with the biggest ego (and cash) holds the forte! Adedibu's ego is so massive that the rest of Oyo keeps mum while he wields disgustingly stupendous power over them.

Default While Anambra flounders, it is not yet Uhuru in Oyo

Akala: Says Court Can't Sack Me, accuses brother Tinubu of interference
From Iyabo Lawal, Ibadan

The stage appeared set yesterday for Governor Rashidi Ladoja's return to the Oyo State Government House as the police authorities assigned 21 anti-riot and regular policemen to him.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Jonathan Johnson yesterday confirmed that 21 policemen had been assigned to Ladoja.

Arrangements were also said to be in top gear to restore his security details.

The governor's lawyer, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) told The Guardian yesterday that he wrote a letter to the Inspector-General of Police requesting for the restoration of Ladoja's security details. Olanipekun said the IG responded that he had directed the Oyo police chief to do so.

The unfolding scenario is sequel to the verdict of the Court of Appeal, Ibadan Division, which last Wednesday reinstated Ladoja as Oyo State Governor. He was impeached last January by 18 lawmakers loyal to Ibadan politician, Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu

Johnson spoke as Ladoja expressed his readiness to assume office as soon as his security aides were complete.

But in a reaction, Alao Akala declared yesterday that no court could remove him from office as what happened among the legislators was purely a legislative matter. He spoke with reporters on the developments in Ibadan and accused Governor Bola Tunubu of Lagos State of interfering in the political crisis in Oyo, which he said was purely an internal affair. He said he did not install himself as governor neither did he beg for the office but God made him the State Chief Executive.

"Is it possible for me to install myself as governor?

Did any court install me? Can any court remove me as governor? What they did is not an election tribunal that would decide who will be on seat as governor.

House of Assembly says this is not what we want. Did I apply to be a governor?" he queried.

Meanwhile, the nullification of the impeachment process by the court has started to claim casualties among journalists in the state-owned Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) whose principal staff were re-deployed for airing the Court of Appeal judgment on the radio and television services. Besides, a wild protest led by Adedibu was made to the management of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in Ibadan on the manner of airing the report.

Following conflicting reports on whether or not Ladoja's security had been restored, Johnson who said he was not competent to speak on the issue pointed out that as far as he was concerned, the governor had been provided with security.

According to him, 15 regular and four anti-riot policemen as well as two men from the state Intelligence Bureau were deployed to provide security for Ladoja.

But Ladoja said he was waiting for the Inspector General of Police IGP to restore his aides particularly his Aide-de Camp, police Orderly and the Chief Security Officer (CSO).

The re-deployed state media Chief are Alhaji Kola Bolomope, Director News and Current Affairs; Mr. Niyi Yusuf, Deputy Director, News and Current Affairs, Alhaji Tunji Alawaye, Chief Editor and Mrs. Lola Makinde also a Chief Editor. They were re-deployed to Tourism Board and Cultural Centre.

They were served with their letter of redeployment yesterday and no reason was given for their redeployment.

Adebayo Alao-Akala summoned one of the directors and the reporter who covered the Appeal Court to his office for airing the judgment .

At the Zonal office of the NTA, it was learnt that

Adedibu alongside his supporters including the

Deputy Governor, Hazeem Gbolarumi and the Special

Adviser to the Governor on Communications, Diran

Odeyemi among others stormed the Agodi office of the Manager, Mrs. Vicky Olumudi to protest the station's reporting of the judgement.

The Guardian learnt that Adedibu was returning from the government secretariat where he had led a solidarity march to Alao- Akala in the wake of the euphoria that greeted the judgment from the people of the state when he suddenly made a detour to the television station to protest the usage of the story on the news bar of the NTA network service.

Olumudi, who confirmed Adedibu's visit to his office,

however said she was not assaulted by his men as "he merely came to protest the airing of the court

judgement and everybody has a right to protest."

While calling on Tinubu to steer clear of Oyo

Alao-Akala warned that if he failed to heed his advice, he would make Lagos ungovernable for the rest of the year

He said: "A long as Tinubu is the Governor of Lagos

State and not the President of Nigeria, he should leave Oyo State alone. If he doesn't leave our state alone, we would look for a way to make the rest of this year ungovernable for him too in Lagos State.

"We are aware of the antics of Governor Tinubu and I want to say categorically that he should mind his own business. He should leave us alone in Oyo. If he has any senatorial ambition, he should wait for the 2007 election, which is just around the corner. And if he is interested in Oyo State, let him contest

the 2007 presidential elections so that the state would be part of his constituency."

Common sense dictates that this Dame Virgy woman did the right thing by making herself available for swearing in. Everyone knows that PDP ochestrated the illegal impeachment, since they are in the majority. Moreover, the PDP Speaker would have been sworn in, since nature abhorbs a vacuum.

Kudos to Anambrarians for averting an otherwise given state of emergency.

I am sorry to say that Anambra Igbos are shame to that respected tribes. Haba! Dont they have the minds of their own? Can they be courageous enough to fight their tormentor within and outside their community. I am ashamed as a Nigeria even though I amnot from that part of the country where MONEY MONEY MONEY is everything. Up to now no one can precisely point out the offence of the innocent Obi like his predecessor, Ngige. God will save us from our known and unknown tormentors. Below is an article written in 2003 which is still apt at this moment.

IBO POLITICS AND HOLLYWOOD MOVIE
Daily Independent August 7, New Nigeria July29, Thisday July27, Comet July30,
Nigerian Tribune August20, Daily Trust August 29,2003

By YAShuaib
If a new film is produced today with the title “The Saga of Ngige,” or “Anambra in Bondage” or even with subtle title of the “Ibo Godfathers,” the movie would definitely sell large copies on its release especially if the production has full involvement of popular actors, producers and marketers from the Eastern part of the country. The systematic productions of attractive movies that depict the cultures of the Ibos infuse a kind of cultural imperialism in the psyches of the viewers of the home video who cut across tribes and creeds. The actors are the new breed superstars, while their marketers are the emerging millionaires from motion pictures. Most story lines which centred on endemic rivalry due to envy over riches, land disputes, chieftaincy titles and marriages are, at the end, settled or exacerbated through occultism and violence. Since an average Ibo does not have interest in partisan politics apart from full engagement in business ventures, only few films sponsored by emerging political fathers are produced on statecraft.

While for several years, Yoruba and some Hausa movies dominated local cinemas, the entry of Igbo films in the early 90s, gave raise to the tremendous improvement in home video production that are widely marketed at home and abroad. No matter what they lay their hands on, morally or objectionable, the Ibos always upstage the pioneers. When some undesirable elements from other parts of the country were discreetly defrauding innocent victims of their hard earned treasures in the past, Nigerians suddenly woke up to the dastard acts of advanced fee fraud as perpetrated by some young chaps from a section of the country who enhanced the scam. They not only publicly pronounce their overnight ill-gotten wealth, they acquire chieftaincy titles, state-of-the-art cars and dole out money like Kosai/Akara to their bewildered suffering citizens. The records and list of those in the net from the Ribadu-led 419 Commission are clear testimonies. One may still wonder whether the award winning and charismatic Amazon, fighting against fake drug, is not from that noble tribe.

The recent event in Anambra State, where the first civilian coup against a civilian administration in the country was foiled, has made those conversant with politics in that part of the country to wonder aloud whether it was just a nightmare or another best-selling Nigerian movie about to upstage the popular foreign films which have the feature of the Italian Mafias, Underworld Godfathers, wicked intelligent agencies and political gangsterism. In fact the substitution of winners of elections to legislative houses with those who never vied for the posts in Anambra, would make foreign script writers struggle to produce a befitting millennium movie from the enigma.

Generalization of issues and attitudes on the basis of individuals’ misdemeanors within groups, and associating such with particular tribe or race may be seen as grievous exaggeration and contemptible. But once unwholesome activities are consistently perpetrated and associated with individuals or groups within a particular bloodline as identified by tribes, then generalizations may, to some extent be justifiable. The actions of Ibo leaders before the recent Anambra imbroglio are lamentable. It may be recalled that the presidential primaries of most political parties witnessed a large turn out of aspirants from the region, but at the end their enormous numbers were of no substance. Most of their senators selfishly tussled for the single seat of senate president; their several socio-cultural groups are always on loggerheads; while their godfathers appeared to be plotting to overdo one another in the scheme of things. In fact they fought themselves intermittently.

How did the Ibo tribe reach this political crescendo when they have in their midst the cream of eminent politicians, shrewd businessmen, the intelligentsia of repute, revered traditional rulers and dynamic activists? Is it not from the same region we have individuals who are inspirations to others in every sphere of national endeavour and make indelible marks in the nation’s history? We talk of the first Nigerian President, Chief Nnamdi Azikiwe and the former Vice President, Chief Alex Ekwueme; we like honest publishers in persons of Chief Nwanyawu and Sunny Odogwu; we envy the educated traditional rulers like Professor (Obi) Chike Edozien of Asaba ( a professor in Medicine) and Prof (Obi) Nnemeka Achebe of Onitsa, we learn greatly from their academicians such as Prof Pat Utomi, Professor Chinua Achebe just to mention a few.

Each region and tribe in the country has expressed the issue of marginalisation in the polity, but that the Ibos are more marginalized after the Civil War is not in dispute. It is obvious and regrettable that they have insufficient and little representation in sensitive posts after the war where they had occupied several top positions in the public service and in the military. It was in view of this ill and in sympathy to their plight that there was advocacy for the emergence of a credible candidate for the presidency from that part of the country. But their regular infightings and the recent movie-like fracas in Anambra, portrayed the Ibo race as the most disorganized in practical politics. This fact has been attributed to an extreme adoration for wealth, where politics is viewed as business enterprises for money making. What could have been the fate of that section if it had succeeded in the battle for the secession from the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the 60s? Many nationalities would have probably evolved from the region, where they could have experienced genocide as the case with smaller countries like the events in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast among several others.

Today, whether we like it or not, every Nigerian believes that the most mobile, industrious, creative and hardworking Nigerians are the Ibos. A first time traveller or a stranger in any part of the country can consider himself safe if an Ibo person is dwelling in the host environment. As respected and widely traveled traders, the people are recognised as investors who could make profit from decent to dreadful ventures no matter how long it takes. They are the group who could reproduce any new product and equipment within a short while to admiration and bewilderment of manufacturers. Though embarrassing attitudes of chauvinists who call such reproduced goods as Ibo made, force the indigenous manufacturers to inscribe foreign and fictitious labels to their wares at the risk of floating the law of imitation when they deserve our total encouragement and improvement to meet international standards.

As good as they may be in different field of human endeavour with rich culture, it is unfortunate that Ibos have allowed young gangsters whose sources of wealth are questionable to hijack political parties and by extension overtake the state machinery for the purpose of sharing the national cake to the detriment of their populace. The illegal monetary inducement and subventions to godfathers are probably the reason most states could not pay their workers’ remunerations as when due and execute projects, since the godsons must dedicate chunks of fund from monthly federation account to service the palms of unquenchable and cunning business-politicians. It is incredible that in this democratic dispensation, some groups of people have the gut to negotiated sharing formula of public offices and treasury to individuals before assumption of office.

If some illiterate young men below the age of forty could be worshiped by elders and conferred with the title of big Daddy and Godfathers, then the clamour for youth empowerment for social re-engineering and transformation of the polity would remain a mirage. In fact the actions of the new breed godfathers, is enough for the political elders to further deny the youth the right to self-recognition and assertiveness in taking up sensitive positions.

It is beyond imagination that while elder statesmen are denied police escorts and ordinary citizens deprived of minimum state protection, the moneybags and politicians recruit the service of the police as their private security to terrorize and oppress anyone whether in government or in private business. If this privileged service is not controlled and the beneficiaries tamed, a period would come when the rich and gang leaders may recruit the navy, army and air force as private security that they could easily deploy to overthrow a democratic government.

Surprisingly, weeks after the dastard acts in Anambra State, the major culprits were/are still roaming the streets freely as if there is no law to prosecute them. Were they to come from the opposition parties such as All Nigerian People Party (ANPP), Alliance for Democracy (AD) or even All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) wouldn’t the culprits be rounded up immediately and prosecuted for treason while their accounts frozen and properties confiscated like other unsuccessful coup plotters in the past?

The Ibos are highly respected for being industrious, enterprising and cultured people whose impacts are felt across the globe. They need to wake up from their slumber and purge out undesirable elements from their midst. They need to look inward and wage war against fraudsters, ritualists, gangsters and business-politicians who drive their name to disrepute. Let them put their acts together and stop immature politicians from using the enviable tribe to stage a new Hollywood Movie.

By the way, from where is this judicial actor, Justice Wilson Egbo-Egbo whose intervention in clearing Wabara-Imo Senatorial palaver and the sacking Ngige as Governor?

The governors should reject as deeply offensive any attempt at blackmail by Obasanjo and his attack dogs. They should especially discard their whining for a more purposeful and robust stand against the militaristic onslaught on Nigerian democracy by the Aso Rock ‘born-again’ tyrant and his henchmen in the likes of Adedibu, el-Rufai, Bode George, Nuhu Ribadu, Chris Uba, Mantu, Ahmadu Ali and Anenih......

MrOneNaija,

I take it you were referring to the present cohort of dishonourable governors, here?
Have I correctly assumed you've just summoned the likes of Kalu, Daniels, Odili, Dariye, Igbinedion, etc, to spearhead the struggle for Nigeria’s soul?

I ask now because I anticipate Ladoja (Oyo state) will soon assume his ‘rightful’ place as the head of a new vanguard (movement) of progressive governors…
Never mind the fact that his erstwhile noble cause might not have arisen but for a fall-out with a certain godfather.
That, he (Ladoja), like so many of our sitting governors, is morally bankrupt –and a common thief edified only by high office - will matter so little in the end; for he, like many others, has long had his ‘conversion’ en route Damascus.
Good for OBJ, after his 3-year stint in prison; good for Ladoja.

And do I hear Mrs Dame Virgy Etiaba now has power trust upon her by dint of the constitution?
And lo, “She owes no one or group any allegiance but the state’s electorate”, just like Adebayo Alao-Akala (Oyo state), who foretold this story?
A woman, of substance, and a pace setter, that heralds more good tidings?
Or yet another aberration that drives home all that is wrong with the present political class.

[QUOTE]

It is very obvious that the PDP wants to destroy the geographycal entity called Nigeria, the same PDP will invite the military come 2007, the same PDP will form the pro democracy movement when the soldiers come, the only consolation is that they have set up a time bomb which will consume all off them, from Ojo Maduekwe to Fani Kayode, Ribadu to EL Rufai just to name a few.

President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has lent moral support to the gubernatorial ambition of Dr. Andy Uba who has signified interest to vie for the highest seat in Anambra State next year.

Uba, according to Dangote, remains the best candidate for the governorship seat in Anambra given his “visionary leadership qualities coupled with his honesty.”

Dangote spoke in the October edition of a monthly business journal – Poverty Control.
Said Dangote: “To tell you the truth, how I wish to have somebody in the mould of Andy to go and run for governorship in my home state. I am not trying to disparage anybody or be emotional, but Andy is somebody that is very intelligent.”

The billionaire businessman explained that his support for Uba was borne out of his conviction of his sincerity and capability to face the challenges ahead.
He also spoke about the benefits that would acrrue to the state if, as he predicts, President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Senior Special Assistant emerges Governor of Anambra State.

Said he: “He is a visionary leader. He is someone who is not going there to steal money. And in matters of dishonesty, you have to count him out. Andy doesn’t subscribe to such things. He is not the kind of politician that will take the trust reposed in him as a license to go and loot the treasury.”

Still vouching for the gubernatorial aspirant, Dangote maintained that “Andy will never steal a kobo from Anambra State’s coffers. So, that is why if one can have people like Andy to agree to go and serve as a governor, it’s a big blessing to that state he intends to govern.”
To underscore Uba’s competence in whatever he was committed to, Dangote noted that President Olusegun Obasanjo could testify to his eligibility.

“If you interview President Obasanjo today, the president will tell you that one of the greatest things that has ever happened to him is having Andy. So you can see what I mean. He is visionary, so much so that Mr. President can describe him (Andy) as a gift of God to him (Obasanjo).”

He, however, tried to correct the impression that only a hard and rugged person is needed in Anambra Government House:
“Being quiet doesn’t mean you are incapable. For example, I see myslef as a very successful businessman and you know, by nature, I am very quiet and shy. But it doesn’t mean I don’t know what I am doing. The same thing with Andy.”

Reacting to suggestions that Uba should be groomed for future presidency, Dangote said that he has to start somewhere. According to him, after eight years tenure in Anambra, he would be a good candidate, mature and ready for the presidency:

“The way Andy has lived and worked tirelessly during the last seven years in the Villa, it is right to encourage him to go for presidency. But then, he has to start from somewhere. I think Andy will be a good candidate and here is a man who is highly detribalised. He is not that type of person that talks only about Igbos or whatever. If today is the time of the South-East to produce the next president for Nigeria, I will vote for Andy before voting for anybody.”
