Default District 9 disses Nigeria

Whether you like Alien/Science fiction movies or not, this is one movie that's thoroughly enjoyable. And for once a hollywood movie is set in Africa without actually portraying Africa/Africans negatively..except for Nigerian scam artists, prostitutes, and flesh eaters.

The movie is about some aliens stranded/Quarantined for 20 years in a slum (D9) of Jo'burg in South Africa. All other humans want them out and they want to go home too, except for the Nigerians who are trading cat food for alien weaponry (Cat Food Scam, they called it). As if that wasn't bad enough Nigerian girls were portrayed as prostituting with aliens, and the Nigerian gang was portrayed as eating Alien flesh for black power magic. To make sure this sinks in, the name Nigeria was stressed over and over in the movie..so much that even though it was a thoroughly enjoyable movie, its hard to be proud of Nigeria immediately afterwards..

I was woindering why Hollywood is so much after us, but was surprised that the actual director (not Peter Jackson) was actually south african.

This is another price to pay for the rudderless leadership in our coutry. Except for maybe SOMALIA, I doubt any country will take this without protest. But those who should are busy in Abuja..

__

Another good movie worth checking out is THE HURT LOCKER. You haven't seen an Iraqi war movie until you see this one. 5 STARS

I'm seeing "District 9" tonight and I'm already wondering whether to organize a protest around the movie's portrayal of Nigerians. The Hurt Locker is the best movie I've seen this year by a mile.

By the way, remember that South Africans can be White. From what I have read, the Director was more concerned with how Whites like himself are being displaced from South Africa, and less with apartheid.

Mr. Lee (Kwan Yew - Leader of Singapore): Why should I be against democracy? The British came here, never gave me democracy, except when they were about to leave. But I cannot run my system based on their rules. I have to amend it to fit my people's position. In multiracial societies, you don't vote in accordance with your economic interests and social interests, you vote in accordance with race and religion. Supposing I'd run their system here, Malays would vote for Muslims, Indians would vote for Indians, Chinese would vote for Chinese. I would have a constant clash in my Parliament which cannot be resolved because the Chinese majority would always overrule them. So I found a formula that changes that...

Nollywood keeps showing the worst of Nigerian society so Hollywood now thinks they they have the perogative to go ten steps further and potray Nigerians as the worst of the worst.
Shame on the director and the Producers!

Thumbs up Dora Akunyili wants to stop District 9 film

Nigeria 'offended' by sci-fi film

Click the image to open in full size. The film depicts aliens living in a South African shanty town

Nigeria's government is asking cinemas to stop showing a science fiction film, District Nine, that it says denigrates the country's image.

Information Minister Dora Akunyili told the BBC's Network Africa programme that she had asked the makers of the film, Sony, for an apology.
She says the film portrays Nigerians as cannibals, criminals and prostitutes.
An actor from the film said that it was not just Nigerians who were portrayed as villains.
The Malawian actor, Eugene Khumbanyiwa, plays a gang leader with the nickname of Obasanjo, also the surname of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.

---------

There they go again. You can predict the next line of action. If Sony BMG does not backdown, the NTA contract awarded to Sony will be revoked! We shall wait and see how both sides tackle each other.

The Minister is trying to drag Nollywood into this. That'll be most unfortunate and costly. Nollywood has survived as a private sector led initiative. Its many flaws nowithstanding, it has achieved far more to rebranding Nigeria than Akunyili, NTA, Radio Nigeria, New Nigeria and other cash guzzling officials/agencies of government has/shall ever accomplish(ed).

The more the Minister complains about the film the more popular it gets. Already, the film is topping the charts. If Sony withdraws it or censors it, bootleggers will release the original version and make a fortune off it.

What Akunyili and the government should do is to accept that "rebranding" has failed woefully and that the only way to rebrand Nigeria is for those who are holding it hostage to release it.

A good product sells itself...

Dora is trying but needs to protect the image of citizens abroad who are falsely accused in foreign countries. She also needs to intervene in the crisis in Libya where hundreds of fleeing Nigerians are being held hostages and abused in camps. The sci fi hit back is good but she seems to forget that she is only protecting the fact that the former head of state is being protected not the citizens. Obasanjo was a gangster anyway so Nigerians are not really bothered. The Attorney General for Fraud (AGF) is busy running errands for Ibori in England, this shows the new type of rebranding we are implementing. Big man must protect big man (in this case is big woman must protect big man.).

It has been banned in Cinemas in Nigeria. I was at Silverbird to check out there offerings of new movies for the week & I discovered that the District 9 billboard was conspicuosly missing & on the flier it was crossed out. I also confirmed from the staff it was no longer showing.
Maybe Dora should go into Nollywood & ban films depicting voodoo, 419 & the occult plus depiction or portrayal of certain regions as being houselhelps & security men.
It was a good sci-fi movie & I am glad I watched it before it was banned.
