Google maps is great for exploring the world from your armchair. If you type in an address for most major cities, you'll come up with an exact location on a map.

Well, "most major cities" hadn't included Lagos... until now. I noticed that Google had already added detailed satellite mapping of Lagos to its maps, so I figured that labelled mapping wasn't too far behind - and I wasn't wrong, as can be seen by the photo below:

As you can see, quite a few of the streets are labelled, even though some of the labelling is wrong (Tokunbo St does not stretch all the way to the east of Lagos Island). I also wonder why the RCCG church is so prominently labelled when other prominent buildings aren't (like the palace of the Oba of Lagos). But it's definitely an improvement over what was present a month ago.

I also notice that in maps of Nigeria, roads are depicted with A- signage (e.g. the Lagos-Ibadan expressway is known as the A1). Since when have we had this signage?

    Thanks.

I saw "Ibrahim Babangida Bridge" on the 3MB extension and I groaned...

Btw, I think the highway numbering had been in place (mainly on a few federal roads, I think) for some time. I remember seeing some when I was much younger, and asking my Oldman what it was. I was too young to understand his answer - until the James Hardley Chase days when I read about US Interstate Highways 95 etc..

    Oh, and might I add:

Why do we have to ape this British in everything? I'dve prefered we 'copy' from the 'New World' rather than from the Old Country..especially when Nigeria isn't a tiny Island in Europe.

We need big roads and 'New Age' road numbering system, not some conservative British style..

    Auspicious,

I think we already ape the 'New World' in many other ways already - we copy their political system, their road signage on expressways (green signs with yellow indicating mandatory exits) and the side of the road they drive on. What's the problem using A- instead of I- ?

Eherm, i think tokunboh st is a very long st and actually extends to the east, but then might not be as long as depicted on this map.

I also wonder why The Iga Iduganran...the Oba's Palace is not listed...maybe for security reasons?

    Lady Emj,

I think that the road that is labelled Tokunbo St. is probably Lewis St. Perhaps a Lagosian like Wale Akin might be able to comment on this...

You have a point there Shoks, except that I am beginning to see Nigeria do more British with road-marks (labelling - arrows and all) in places like Lagos these days.

@ EMJ: WaleAkin? That man is a walking SATNAV!

Probably Lewis st, but i know that tokunboh is a very long st...the map layout does not do much justice to it..Bamgbose is another long one from what i can recall..we're talking of how many kilometres?

    @ Auspy,
    Yes he's a walking Satnav.....lol
