WOMEN OF COLOR ARTS & FILM FESTIVAL MUSIC SHOWCASE

Atlanta, Georgia – Sensational singer/songwriter Asa [Asha] will headline the Women of Color Arts & Film (WOCAF) Festival music showcase, Sunday evening, March 22, 2009, 8:00pm, (doors open at 6:00pm) at The Atrium, 5479 Memorial Drive, Stone Mountain, Georgia, 30038, 404-658-1332. Tickets are $15 in advance at www.wocaf.org, $20 at the door and a limited number of VIP tickets at $30.

An eclectic guitarist, Asa’s debut album was certified Gold just three months after its release in France. She is currently #5 on the itunes world chart and peaked to #9 on the overall itunes chart. Her music has been described as Afro folk and she has been compared to such great artists like Bob Marley, Erika Badu and Jimmy Cliff. Born in Paris of Nigerian heritage, Asa continues to make waves on the International music scene. Asa has flown in from Paris en route her world tour to bless the Women of Color Arts & Film Festival at her debut Atlanta performance. “The music showcase is in its third year at the WOCAF Festival and we are so happy to have Asa as the headliner,” says Mojisola Sonoiki, WOCAF Festival Founder & Director. “It is wonderful for such an internationally acclaimed artist to be part of our festival”.
As the WOCAF Festival continues to grow with over 2,000 people attending through-out the 4-day event, which includes a film festival, a visual arts exhibition and music showcase all celebrating women of color, the Festival Founder & Director envisions expanding the arts division to also include drama and dance. “We plan to include all kinds of artistic culture, from an international perspective,” says Sonoiki, “and with dynamic artists like Asa on our roster, I’m sure we will create a following that will last a lifetime.”
The film festival and visual arts segment will take place, Thursday evening, March 19 – Sunday, March 22, 2009, at the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American History & Culture, 101 Auburn Avenue, downtown, Atlanta, Georgia, 30303. The film festival highlights include Ramchand Pakistani (Pakistan/India), Say My Name (UK/USA), Arugba (Nigeria) and much more.

Now in its fifth year, The WOCAF’s schedule of films and music attracts a diverse audience of women and men. Each year, films from Africa, America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Asia and Europe are showcased. Founded in 2005, The WOCAF Festival - produced by Iyàlódè productions in collaboration with the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture and History-is the only festival of its kind in the Southeast of the USA that is dedicated to showcasing the music and films by and about women of color.
