In addition, there is currently an Australian Government funded drive to provide free swine flu vaccination to vulnerable members of the population, including pregnant women, the elderly, health care workers because of the risks involved in their work environment, and so on. People advised NOT to take the swine flu vaccine includes children below 10 years old and persons on certain medications, allergies to egg and egg products, and those with known reactions to the regular flu vaccines.
It appears these days ANYONE/EXPERT can appear on TV, or the internet and say/write things, but a little caution won't go astray in this "EXPERT'S" case.
IMO, an EXPERT who is still (in this day and age) stating a causal link between autism and vaccines in minors; and advising pregnant women not to vaccinate (when proven and credible sources clearly states the contrary) is one whose views should be carefully scrutinised, (especially on 'FOX'). | Re: H1N1 Vaccine Update on Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccines –October 09, 2009
On September 15, 2009, four influenza vaccine manufacturers received approval from the Food and Drug Administration for use of influenza A (H1N1) 2009 monovalent influenza vaccines in the prevention of influenza caused by the 2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus.* Both live, attenuated and inactivated influenza A (H1N1) 2009 monovalent vaccine formulations are available; each contains the strain A/California/7/2009(H1N1)pdm. None of the approved influenza A 2009 (H1N1) monovalent vaccines or seasonal influenza vaccines contains adjuvants (1--5). CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has made recommendations previously for which persons should be the initial targets for immunization with influenza A (H1N1) 2009 monovalent vaccines and has issued guidelines on decisions for expansion of vaccination efforts to other population groups (6). Children aged 6 months--9 years receiving influenza A (H1N1) 2009 monovalent vaccines should receive 2 doses, with doses separated by approximately 4 weeks; persons aged ≥10 years should receive 1 dose (1--4). The approved age groups for use of inactivated influenza A (H1N1) monovalent influenza vaccines differ by manufacturer (Table). Three manufacturers that produce inactivated vaccines approved for prevention of seasonal influenza (6) also produce formulations of influenza A (H1N1) 2009 monovalent influenza vaccines. Vaccine produced by CSL Limited is approved for use in persons aged ≥18 years (1), vaccine produced by Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics Limited is approved for persons aged ≥4 years (2), and vaccine produced by Sanofi Pasteur, Inc. is approved for persons aged ≥6 months (3). A live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) manufactured by MedImmune LLC is approved for persons aged 2--49 years (1). The 2009 (H1N1) monovalent LAIV has the same age range for use as the seasonal LAIV and should not be used to vaccinate children aged <2 years, adults aged >49 years, pregnant women, persons with underlying medical conditions that confer a higher risk for influenza complications, or children aged <5 years old with one or more episodes of wheezing in the past year (5).
Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 monovalent vaccine approvals were made on the basis of standards developed for vaccine strain changes for seasonal influenza vaccines, adherence to manufacturing processes, product quality testing, and lot release procedures developed for seasonal vaccines. The age groups, precautions, and contraindications approved for the influenza A (H1N1) 2009 monovalent vaccine are identical to those approved for seasonal vaccines. All influenza vaccines available in the United States for the 2009--10 influenza season are produced using embryonated hen's eggs and contain residual egg protein.
Preliminary data indicate that the immunogenicity and safety of these vaccines are similar to those of seasonal influenza vaccines. An immunogenicity study of an inactivated influenza A (H1N1) monovalent vaccine manufactured by CSL Limited (Parkville, Victoria, Australia) demonstrated that by day 21 after vaccination, antibody titers of 1:40 or more (hemagglutination-inhibition assay) were observed in 116 (97%) of 120 adults who received the 15 μg dose. Local discomfort (e.g., injection site tenderness or pain) was reported by 46% of subjects, and one or more systemic symptoms (e.g., headache, malaise, or myalgia) by 45% of subjects (7). This safety profile is consistent with results from studies of the seasonal influenza vaccine manufactured by CSL Limited (8). In studies of other seasonal inactivated influenza vaccines, rates of adverse events were not significantly different from placebo injections except for arm soreness and redness at the injection site (9). The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) reported preliminary results of a study among children aged 6 months--18 years. Among children aged 6--35 months, 3--9 years, and 10--17 years immunized with a 15 μg inactivated influenza A 2009 (H1N1) monovalent vaccine (Sanofi Pasteur, Inc., Swiftwater, PA), 25%, 36% and 76%, respectively, developed antibody titers of 1:40 or more (hemagglutination-inhibition assay) after a single dose of vaccine.† Immunogenicity and safety study results similar to those observed for seasonal vaccines also have been reported by the other manufacturers (MedImmune LLC, Gaithersburg, MD and Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics, Limited, Liverpool, UK, unpublished data, 2009).
Influenza activity attributed to 2009 H1N1 viruses has increased during September 2009 and is expected to continue through the fall and winter influenza season. Surveillance data indicate that the 2009 H1N1 viruses have not undergone substantial antigenic change since they were first characterized in April 2009 and should be well-matched to the monovalent vaccine strain (10). Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 monovalent vaccines will be available in many areas by mid-October. Vaccines against seasonal influenza are available now, and immunization programs and providers should begin or continue administering seasonal influenza vaccines as recommended (5,6). Additional data from clinical trials will be available over the coming weeks, and immunization providers should periodically look for updates on use of influenza A (2009) H1N1 monovalent vaccines at http://www.cdc.gov/flu. † Two doses administered approximately 4 weeks apart (≥21 days acceptable) are recommended for children aged 6 months--9 years.
§ The preferred site for infants and young children is the anterolateral aspect of the thigh.
¶ Live attenuated influenza vaccine. A 0.2-mL dose contains 106.5--7.5 fluorescent focal units of live attenuated influenza virus reassortants of A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)pdm.
** Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 LAIV is shipped refrigerated and stored in the refrigerator at 36°F--46°F (2°C--8°C) after arrival in the immunization clinic. The dose is 0.2 mL divided equally between each nostril. LAIV should not be administered to persons with asthma. Health-care providers should consult the medical record, when available, to identify children aged 2--4 years with asthma or recurrent wheezing that might indicate asthma. In addition, to identify children who might be at greater risk for asthma and possibly at increased risk for wheezing after receiving LAIV, parents or caregivers of children aged 2--4 years should be asked: "In the past 12 months, has a health-care provider ever told you that your child had wheezing or asthma?" Children whose parents or caregivers answer "yes" to this question and children who have asthma or who had a wheezing episode noted in the medical record during the preceding 12 months should not receive LAIV.
†† Two doses administered approximately 4 weeks apart are recommended for children aged 2--9 years.

Date last reviewed: 10/8/2009 http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwr...cid=mm5839a3_e AY’s Comments:
Here in the U.S., children and pregnant women are indicated as part of the high risk groups and are encouraged to get the H1N1 vaccine as soon as it is available, except children under 6 months of age who have not been recommended to receive the vaccine but their caregivers are advised to do so to protect the little ones.
It is quite possible that CSL Limited of Australia advices the Australian Health department and if so, it would make sense that the H1N1 vaccine available there is limited to adults only since their brand is indicated for ≥18 yrs. Please see the TABLE in the article. Anyone can subscribe to MMWR for instant updates as they become available.
Here is more information from CDC. You can subscribe to www.cdc.gov as well and here is a link to additional info on the Novel H1N1Virus (formerly known as Swine FLU). http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/vaccinati...ion_qa_pub.htm
Another great source of information is the NIH (National Institute of Health) where most of the current clinical trials are ongoing. Check out: http://www.nih.gov/ http://www3.niaid.nih.gov/topics/Flu/
and in particular for pregnant women, here is a study that may interest you: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/sh...0963430&rank=1
So, there is a great wealth of information out there, “free”. The challenging outlook for the patient is the increased confusion with the media “hype” on H1N1, and perhaps rightly so, due to the novelty of the virus, and the sequelae and respiratory infections which have led to alarming mortality rates in those infected/hospitalized.
As of the week ending 08-29-2009, according to the CDC, 556 of those hospitalized in the U.S. have died from complications of the H1N1. Based on the number of months we have been introduced to H1N1 (since April, 2009) that means 556 died within 5 months.
Not to scare anyone, it is a known fact that >36,000 die from Seasonal Influenza (which we are already very familiar with) alone every year. Expectedly, as the Seasonal FLU blooms into full season, it is quite possible to see increased mortality rates from the H1N1 when superimposed by illnesses from Seasonal FLU. But those numbers (H1N1), based on what is known so far, will most probably pale significantly in comparison to mortality rates from Seasonal FLU. Therefore, it makes more sense to get the Seasonal Influenza Vaccine now that it’s widely available. For the H1N1, if you are not certain, please ask your provider/doctor who knows you well.
The most significant factor here is the role the patient’s provider/doctor plays in educating and recommending the “right” vaccination for the unique patient.
Here, the provider has the life-saving and ethical responsibility to ensure that adequate and accurate current information is at his/her fingertips when he/she makes the recommendation to each unique patient. More importantly, the provider/doctor is encumbered with ensuring that he/she presents a well balanced educated view to that unique patient in assisting him/her to make the best decision for his/her health.
Stay well.

| Re: H1N1 Vaccine Safety of pandemic vaccines Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 briefing note 16
19 NOVEMBER 2009 | GENEVA -- </SPAN>To date, WHO has received vaccination information from 16 of around 40 countries conducting national H1N1 pandemic vaccine campaigns. Based on information in these 16 countries, WHO estimates that around 80 million doses of pandemic vaccine have been distributed and around 65 million people have been vaccinated. National immunization campaigns began in Australia and the People’s Republic of China in late September.
Vaccination campaigns currently under way to protect populations from pandemic influenza are among the largest in the history of several countries, and numbers are growing daily. Given this scale of vaccine administration, at least some rare adverse reactions, not detectable during even large clinical trials, could occur, underscoring the need for rigorous monitoring of safety. Results to date are encouraging. Common side effects
As anticipated, side effects commonly reported include swelling, redness, or pain at the injection site, which usually resolves spontaneously a short time after vaccination.
Fever, headache, fatigue, and muscle aches, occurring shortly after vaccine administration, have also been reported, though with less frequency. These symptoms also resolve spontaneously, usually within 48 hours. In addition, a variety of allergic reactions has been observed. The frequency of these reactions is well within the expected range. Guillain-Barre syndrome To date, fewer than ten suspected cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome have been reported in people who have received vaccine. These numbers are in line with normal background rates of this illness, as reported in a recent study. Nonetheless, all such cases are being investigated to determine whether these are randomly occurring events or if they might be associated with vaccination.
WHO has received no reports of fatal outcomes among suspected or confirmed cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome detected since vaccination campaigns began. All cases have recovered. WHO recommends continued active monitoring for Guillain-Barre syndrome. Investigations of deaths
A small number of deaths have occurred in people who have been vaccinated. All such deaths, reported to WHO, have been promptly investigated. Although some investigations are ongoing, results of completed investigations reported to WHO have ruled out a direct link to pandemic vaccine as the cause of death. In China, for example, where more than 11 million doses of pandemic vaccine have been administered, health authorities have informed WHO of 15 cases of severe side effects and two deaths that occurred following vaccination. Thorough investigation of these deaths, including a review of autopsy results, determined that underlying medical conditions were the cause of death, and not the vaccine. Safety profile of different vaccines
Campaigns are using nonadjuvanted inactivated vaccines, adjuvanted inactivated vaccines, and live attenuated vaccines. No differences in the safety profile of severe adverse events among different vaccines have been detected to date.
Although intense monitoring of vaccine safety continues, all data compiled to date indicate that pandemic vaccines match the excellent safety profile of seasonal influenza vaccines, which have been used for more than 60 years. For those who are interested in good quality information. __________________ Etsu Nupe of Great Britain Via NVS! |
