US girl becomes Nigeria's first swine flu case
Wed Nov 4, 3:24 pm ET | LINK

ABUJA (AFP) – A nine-year-old American girl has become the first case of swine flu in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, Health Minister Babatunde Osotimehin said Wednesday.

"The first case of the influenza A(H1N1), otherwise called swine flu, has been reported in Nigeria of a nine-year-old American girl residing in Lagos," Osotimehin told reporters in Abuja.

He said the girl had "presented flu-like symptom of fever, sore throat, nasal congestion and nausea" to the American consular clinic in Lagos, and she recovered fully after five days of treatment.

"Further to checks in this regard, it has been confirmed that the father, brother and all school contacts of the girl did not suffer from any flu-like symptoms and they are all well," he said

The minister said the mother of the girl had mild symptoms but had recovered fully.

"All other contacts have been tested and they have been found negative to the influenza A(H1N1)," he said.

Osotimehin urged Nigerians not to panic, adding that government would ensure adequate protection against the pandemic.

More than 5,700 people have died worldwide since the virus was first discovered in April, with most of the deaths -- 4,175 -- in the Americas region, according to the World Health Organization.

It's hard to grow flu in Africa. The sun in Africa has no patience for the flu - it doesn't have patience for me either, so you can imagine what it thinks of the flu...

Mr. Lee (Kwan Yew - Leader of Singapore): Why should I be against democracy? The British came here, never gave me democracy, except when they were about to leave. But I cannot run my system based on their rules. I have to amend it to fit my people's position. In multiracial societies, you don't vote in accordance with your economic interests and social interests, you vote in accordance with race and religion. Supposing I'd run their system here, Malays would vote for Muslims, Indians would vote for Indians, Chinese would vote for Chinese. I would have a constant clash in my Parliament which cannot be resolved because the Chinese majority would always overrule them. So I found a formula that changes that...

China is vast some areas are cold all year round and most places have very cold winter season season which is about to start.

Also all the cars, malls/markets, trains,pubs/eateries, everywhere except the outdoors are air conditioned and sort of enclosed, very much unlike my country Nigeria. The flu no get any chance, the moment you sneeze na so the heat and humid atmos dey fry the germ, the ones that escape are seriously dealt with by meaner germs with years of experience on the terrain.
