A member of a six-man gang of bandits who snatch exotic cars has disclosed how they steal vehicles, sell them and afterwards travel abroad to relax in London, Canada or Germany.
PMNews Crime checks revealed that policemen attached to Meiran Divisional Headquarters (Anti-Robbery Section) were on a patrol within the area when the Divisional Police Officer, Superintendent Festus Otabor, who had earlier received a distress call on the activities of the robbers, called the leader of the anti-robbery team to accost them at Meiran junction.
On sighting the police on their way to Iyana-Ipaja, the armed robbers opened fire and the policemen responded. The police were later informed by the owner of one of the snatched cars that one of the robbers was hit in the head during the exchange of gun fire.
The policemen immediately traced them to Dopemu where they saw one of the cars (Audi) abandoned. Beside the car was one of the robbers, groaning in pains as a bullet had hit him on the side of the head.
The robber was identified as Segun Adewale, although he had initially lied to the police that he was not a robber and that his Gulf car had also been snatched. On further interrogation, he opened up to police detectives at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja.
“I am one of the robbers, we come from Badagry. We had snatched eight cars on the day of my arrest and because we didn’t want the police to get us cheaply, we sprayed them with bullets but I was not so lucky, while my other colleagues escaped.
“We often go to relax in London, Canada and Germany for a week after a successful operation and later return to Nigeria. We sell these cars to a popular car dealer in Cotonou.”
