Kano State Police Command has arrested three suspected kidnappers who kidnapped a 3-year-old child and demanded N10 million ransoms, the state police commissioner, CP Mohammed A Yesufu has disclosed.
Speaking to pressmen at the state Police Headquarters, the commissioner said that the command left no stone unturned until it fished out the dare-devil kidnappers, who had threatened to kill the minor if his parents refused to heed their demand.
The commissioner told newsmen that cases of kidnapping were non-existent in the northern part of the country, saying Kano police worked tirelessly until it cracked down the syndicate of the novel phenomenon.
Revealing how his men nabbed the suspects, Yesufu explained that the suspects used an account number of Skye Bank and ordered the parents of the child to lodge the N10 million in it. The account bears the name of one of the suspects.
The gang leader, Ibrahim Datti, 27, confessed to committing the crime, saying, being a poor man, he had intended to use the money to buy a brand new Honda car and live in comfort.
Another suspect, Rilwanu Sulaiman, also confessed to committing the crime, but the third suspect, Adamu Labaran, said he was inadvertently dragged into the crime by his friends who used his account number to effect the payment of the ransom.
"I know the duo of Riwanu and Ibrahim. They are my childhood friends. They came to my shop in the market and demanded for my account number in the pretext that somebody will pay them "some money" through it," Adamu said.
But the commissioner stated that although they could not claim total eradication of crime in the state, noted that rate of crime in the state had dropped drastically.
He said further that on February 6 this year, the police arrested a gang of robbers who robbed one Alhaji Usman Aliyu and killed one Musa Usman, adding that the six suspects had confessed to committing the crime.
While tasking Kano residents to install security and tracking devices in their vehicles, the commissioner disclosed that they had also smashed a car-snatching syndicate that specialised in snatching expensive cars.
The commissioner urged the people to report any criminal activities to the police, assuring that Kano police command was ever ready for rapid response.
