FG moves to save 13 Nigerians in Saudi jail
Federal Government has taken steps to save the lives of 13 young Nigerians arrested and detained at Briman Prison in Jeddah, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia since 2002.
Foreign Affairs Minister, Ojo Maduekwe, who gave this indication in Abuja at the weekend, however, did not give details of government's intervention.
"Our Mission in Riyad will appraise you with the detail. There's a lot to do now that we don't have to make public, like the kind of issue you have raised.
"That is a Consulate challenge. We don't want to condemn any country or agencies without hearing from them," Maduekwe told Daily Independent in Abuja.
The 13 young Nigerians were said to be working in Saudi Arabia as car washmen when they were arrested on September 29, 2002 by immigration operatives. According to one concerned Nigerian who intimated Daily Independent of the plight of the Nigerians, the affected persons had gone to the kingdom of Saudi Arabia about seven years ago and worked as car washmen.
"These young men were not criminals and were contended with washing car under scorching sun to make their living, although some of their visas had expired," he said.
He alleged that on a fateful day, about six years ago, a team of Saudi immigration operatives came to the car wash spot on a raid and there was some fighting which resulted in every one of them escaping.
"Two days later, another team of police men came to the same car wash spot and arrested every Nigerian within sight and took them to the station charging them for the murder of one of the immigration officers who, according to them, died in the hospital due to complications from injury sustained during the fight with the car washers while on duty," said the concerned Nigerian.
The 13 boys, he said, have remained in detention ever since.
"Two years ago, 12 of them were sentenced to seven years imprisonment while one of them was condemned to death - all for a crime they did not commit.
"And because they refused to thumbprint the acceptance of the sentence, it was reviewed and increased to 10 years, three months ago and only yesterday increased to 15 years".
