AWKA—THE senator representing Anambra Central, Chief Annie Okonkwo says he has started mobilizing international support for the checking of erosion ravaging parts of the state. The senator who spoke at Nanka in Orumba North local government area of the state said from all indications, the menace has reached a level where the assistance of the international community is needed in order to save many communities whose houses have been threatened.

Last week, the senator announced that he has set up a non-governmental organization (NGO) known as Anamabra Erosion Foundation to liaise with other NGO’s in other countries to assist in raising N10 billion for the take off of the battle against further spread of erosion in the state.

Okonkwo, who is the vice chairman of the senate committee on environment, explained that the NGO would also liaise with the traditional rulers and people from the affected communities to work out modalities for fighting the menace.

“We are worried at the rate the land slides are increasing daily in Anambra State.

There are more than 1500 erosion sites in the state and because of the magnitude; it has become a world affair.

Annie Okonkwo is a nice guy; we should take him for his words. I don’t think he is playing politics here.
