The Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State says it plans to construct, in Port Harcourt, a three billion naira “befitting party office, which would accommodate 4,000 people” in view of its “massive performance in all past elections held in the state.”
Deputy Governor, Mr. Tele Ikuru who briefed the press in Port Harcourt, yesterday, likened the party in the state to a ship, which sailed through turbulent storms but was “able to weather the storms and berth successfully.
“When the journey started it was rough, the ship suffered weather effect, it was battered by storms, it was rocked by heavy waves, yet it sailed on until it berthed safely and successfully”.
“We plan to reposition our party both structurally and administratively. For the structure we intend to make it more beautiful and more glamorous and be in a position to deliver to the electorate the dividend of democracy.”
Ikuru disclosed that the money would be sourced through fund raising and that the state or local governments would not be approached to donate as it was a purely party affairs and would be handled by party members and other interested individuals.
He said the present party office does not befit a political group that was able to coast home with 319 councillors, 23 council chairmen, 32 members of the state Assembly as well as House of Representatives, three senators and a state governor.
When asked what the party had done to resolve the quarrel between the immediate past governors as well as the former minister for transport and the current governor, he said none of the men had said that they were leaving the party, hence “they are still our party men.
