Hisbah, the Shari’a security outfit established by the Kano State government to enforce Shari’a in the state, has ordered the Association of Divorcees, Widows and Orphans to shelve its mass rally scheduled to hold on 29th of this month in Kano city.
The hisbah board had, after series of meetings with leadership of the association, said the planned rally was against Islamic laws and the moral norms of the Kano people.
In an exclusive interview with Sunday Trust, hisbah deputy commander-general operations, Malam Aliyu Abubakar said the planned protest was not only against the injunctions of the religion, but would ridicule the esteem of the state in the eyes of the world.
He told our reporter that the decision to invite the leadership of the association for talks was to educate it on the ills of the planned rally as well as its implications on the morality and wellbeing of the people.
“We have called a meeting to advise the divorcees along with the commandant of the women wing, Malama Gwaggo Mariya and we have advised them against the rally because it is un-Islamic and morally wrong,” he stressed.
The deputy commander-general explained that hisbah noted all the complaints of the divorcees in order to meet the state government and discuss how best to assist the divorcees and reduce the growing divorce rate in the state.
“This rally will only create bad impression about the state and we are aware that the women have great respect for Islam and for them to protest especially now that the state is being run by shari’a is like ridiculing the efforts of the state government,” he maintained.
He said hisbah had been working tirelessly to bridge the gaps among families and fostered understanding among families.
“We have been serving as bridge between husbands and wives, saving their relationships and we have saved so many marriages through our intervention and we believe educating both sides is the best option and not protesting,” he added.
He said the divorcees must realise that there were better ways of tackling the incidence of divorcee than protesting since there was no law the state Assembly could promulgate outside what the religion had provided.
