Exclamation Yar'Adua: Stop 2011 Campaigns

+

That wouldn't be a bad idea - assuming he's sincere.

Especially when he has little achievement so far.

Better concentrate on work than schemeing to be re-elected.

Auspicious.

PDP SPECIAL NATIONAL CONVENTION:

the Special National Convention of the PDP in

Abuja, yesterday. Photo: Abayomi Adeshida.

man is in a poor state of health)

ABUJA — PRESIDENT Umaru Yar’Adua yesterday reined in his party men who have begun moves towards actualising their political dreams in the next general elections, directing that all campaigns for elective offices in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2011 elections be stopped forthwith. He gave the order at the special National Convention of the party at the Eagle Square, Abuja, yesterday.

“Now, for the PDP, is not the time for politics of 2011. Until then, from now to that time, it is the time for every PDP member holding position of responsibility to concentrate on discharging the burden that is on us”, he said.

According to the President, what should be of paramount importance to all elected and non-elected members of the party should be how to deliver on electoral promises rather than how to win the 2011 general elections.

As if reading the President’s mind, Foreign Affairs Minister, Ojo Maduekwe, warned newly-appointed ambassadors to concentrate on their missions, rather than leave their posts to attend party meetings.

“I will not tolerate ambassadors leaving mission work and coming back to Nigeria to attend party or ward meetings. You must concentrate on the work in your various missions and report back to the headquarters in Nigeria.” He warned.

ar’Adua who also promised to ensure that there would be free, fair and transparent election in 2011, said that he would present an executive bill on electoral reforms to the National Assembly next week, just as he urged all PDP governors to reform their various State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs).

“There is a time for everything and we must be disciplined to do what is right at the right time. Whatever our aspirations are, we must await the time.

“The party will blow the whistle. I am certain, I am not the party chairman or among the members of the National Working Committee, but I am certain that their thinking cannot be earlier than the middle of next year or in fact the third quarter of 2010”, he said.

Time for everything, says YarÁdua

Yar’Adua further stated that “today, I must say I feel highly gratified and enlightened by the special national convention conducted today because of the two principles it has demonstrated.

“The first principle demonstrated here today by the PDP is adherence to the rule of law. All party processes have been done in strict conformity with the constitution of the PDP.

“The second principle demonstrated, which gladdens my heart is the total commitment of the PDP to electoral reform.

“As can be witnessed, the process of amending the constitution clearly demonstrates the principle of internal democracy within the PDP. And as the PDP government embarks on the very important process of electoral reform, the political parties in this country must contribute their quota to internalise democracy within themselves and this has been demonstrated today by the PDP.

“Internal democracy indeed is a tradition of the PDP since its formation in 1998 and we live on this worthy tradition and we will continue as a political party to demonstrate total commitment to internal democracy.

“Let me call on all our party branches in the states and local government levels to be aware and conscious of the responsibility of all PDP members and all organs of this party to ensure the internalisation of democracy in all party processes and in all party activities.

“Nigeria and Nigeria’s electoral process must be credible and a great responsibility falls on the nation’s political parties.

Internal democracy and credible electoral processes begin with the processes inside the political parties themselves.

“If we internalise credible democratic culture, we internalise credible electorate processes within our political parties, definitely it will help the nation to go along way in establishing and internalizing and achieving a credible electoral process.

Govs asked to reform SIECs

“Let me assure all members of our great party and indeed all Nigerians that this PDP administration is totally and fully committed to electoral reform and we are not going to play politics with it.

“We are serious, we are sincere, we want to have and to see this nation evolve a credible democratic culture in the processes of elections in this country.

“This is an issue for which no Nigerian should play politics with. It is central to our democracy and it is important and the administration is committed, the PDP as a party is committed.

Govs asked to reform SIECs

“Let me repeat my call to all state governors and indeed at this national convention to particularly PDP state governors to please initiate the process of reforming the state independent electoral commission.

“This reform at the grassroot level is absolutely necessary to ensure that the whole nation establish this credible culture of democracy and oversee the establishment of a credible electoral process.

“Indeed, as for the Federal Government, it is my intention that by next week, I will submit an executive bill to the National Assembly.

“Precisely in 10 days time, we will be half way through our mandate. Now, I will like to point out clearly, that the PDP bears a great responsibility, a burden of trust placed upon it by the people of this country.

“This party runs the federal government of this country and 27 state governments out of 36 states government, therefore the burden of responsibility and trust placed on the PDP is quite heavy and great and we must at all times rise to the occasion to discharge as best as we can this trust. In doing so, we must be as disciplined as possible.

“In this respect, I heard the National Chairman call on all of us PDP government — federal, state, local government — to continue to exert ourselves to deliver to the people the dividends of democracy, to ensure that we discharge our mandate, carry out activities, projects and functions that will ensure that attainment and the accomplishment of the seven point agenda and the party’s policies and manifesto at the federal and state levels.

“To do this, we must ensure that we become disciplined and demonstrate great sense of responsibility as a political party.

Time will come when the national leadership of the party, the National Working Committee (NWC) and the National Executive Committee (NEC) will come out with the timetable and programme of party nomination for all those aspiring to various offices in the year 2011 but this time has not yet come.

“I am certain that the NWC and the NEC will do this sometime in or the middle of next year. Until then, we must be disciplined enough to concentrate on our mandate. When the time comes and when the party comes out with a clear programme and says these are the criteria and from this date, aspirants to various offices can start to campaign and aspire to these offices, then that is the time for politics.

“Now, for the PDP is not the time for politics of 2011. Until then, from now to that time it is the time for every PDP member holding position of responsibility to concentrate on discharging the burden that is on us.

“Virtually all PDP leaders have one responsibility or another to this nation. Apart from the Federal Government – the presidency, ministers, Special Advisers, Special Assistants, Chairmen and members of boards and parastatals, executive governors, commissioners, executive council, chairmen of the boards of state parastatals, members of the boards, local government council chairmen, councilors and other supervisory councilors, we have all the responsibilities to discharge to the people of this country and we cannot afford at this time to be distracted from facing up and exacting ourselves in the discharge of these responsibilities.

“So until then, let us all concentrate in exacting ourselves to carry out as responsibly as possible and as much as we can according to our various abilities the mandates and the trust place on us by Nigerians.”

Ah, I didn't even see it from that angle.

Good looking, Brother. Oh, good looking.

Still it won't stop him from being in Ekiti Thursday

The State they have found some sudden affinity for

So much so he'd be making his second trip there in 2+ weeks.

I wish him good health despite my misgivings about his leadership so far.

Auspicious.

I think when compared to the animal Obasanjo, YarAdua has tried, cuz even if he did little to nothing, he has not been an Obstacle, and he did not veer us backward, pleasing self interests as Obasanjo did for his second time, when he once again shared Nigeria among friends.

There you go again, using somebody else's failure as a benchmark for measuring success. I think you will be better served to be forward looking - to find progresses and successes for comparisons rather than using others' failure and disappointment as a barometer. You aim for positive examples to emulate, not peek down at failure to measure your level of success.

Eh, Juno..

Even if his wife and kids don't care for him..

Sebi the Guy will at least care for himself, eh?

And, re: Big-K's ref. to "true friends", amongst Nigeria's leaders,

Ain't nothing like that - not when his 'friend' OBJ propped him up

Despite the obvious, dashing to Jamini mid-campaign and all.

The more I look at that photo, the more disturbing it looks to me.

Auspicious.

I must be the only one who consistently refer to him - deadi b00000000di.

As said, if he loved himself, let alone love Nigeria, he'd f ucking quit 365 days ago. Perform some true nation-shaking decisions in 2 weeks, and f cuking quit.

But then some Nigerians are disposed to dying there, as heroic dying. As for campaigns, he has no clue what Nigeria is all about, still if he really thought he was going to steal another election.

Clueless ke? Yar adua, according to his cronies, is a slow-and-steady-wins-the-race guy who takes his time in accessing critical issues so as to ensure that his proffered solution will be infallible and constructive. The man is not clueless o, or visionless either. He is quite on board o. For instance, after 23 months of (assumed) fact-findings, deliberations, advices, brain-stormings and the likes, yar adua has finally come up with his blueprint for tackling the country's inability to progress despite its abundant natural and human resources...............Closer ties with the Arab world!!!

President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua has said the prevailing unfriendly economic situation in the world today calls for closer cooperation between Africa and the Arab world even as he reasoned that this would engender strategic partnership to tackle developmental problems. This is just as Speaker of the House of Representatives; Honourable Dimeji Bankole, who yesterday elected the president of Afro-Arab Parliamentary Union, implored legislators from Africa and Arab nations to address the intractable problem between Israel and Palestine. Bankole is to hold the position for two years.Yar' Adua, who made the call while declaring open the 12th Afro-Arab Parliamentary Conference in Abuja, said this period when the international community is faced with the realities of the massive global economic downturn is meant to pursue more integration between Africa and the Arab world. He said, "The nations of Africa and the Arab world share a number of cultural and socio-economic similarities and common peculiarities. In the face of the emerging realities in our rapidly changing globalised world, it is vitally essential for us to work towards achieving improved strategic partnership and productive cooperation in jointly addressing the manifestation of globalisation and our peculiar development challenges. "It is noteworthy and quite encouraging to witness the commitment of parliamentarians from our two blocs to seeking an effective roadmap towards collectively addressing such challenges as economic volatility, endemic poverty, corruption, HIV/AIDS, political instability, illiteracy, and gender imbalance, among others.
