Folks,
Obama has failed a key test. I can understand throwing black leaders under the bus during the campaign etc, but this is his first real test as President in the black community. This is the first black historical event of his presidency and he has failed woefully. I don't care if he goes to Mount Kilimanjaro to make a big speech tomorrow. He has failed this test. And the black community has taken note.
Pooks,

MJ was bigger than him. Bigger than America. Always was. Always is.
He only needed to say 2 lines. what was he thinking ?

And the black community has taken note.. You were always lukewarm about him anyways, Boss, so one cannot call yours an impartial view. But I have always been a die-hard fan of the guy as well, so I guess the same rules would apply to whatever view I express on this issue. Still, may I submit that the easiest thing in the World to do is to jump on the bandwagon and join in the expression of sorrow - as in, anybody and everybody can release a statement to mourn and touch-base with the legacy of the departed genius of pop and his African-American base. At the end of the day, it is NOT the statement he makes over the sudden depature of the King of Pop, NOR how many MLK memorials he attends, or any such thing that many other politicians do to pander to legacies and things..that will earn him his place in the collective conscience of Black America or beyond. No. On the contrary, it is his policies and actions, the example of his life and life-choices, his direct impact, first as an African-American MAN, and then as an African-American President - it is all these quantifiable actions and more that will determine how much of an appreciable Black Man, an African-American man, that Barack Obama is. The bottomline: I, too, would have appreciated Obama issuing a statement on the death of the pop icon. But now that he didn't, oh well, life goes on... He only needed to write a note, say something, show leadership - comfort! for the world...
Its not photo-op; Its not showboating; Its taking charge.
I dont understand it. At all. I would have thought at least Michelle would make him see it.
Maybe its grieving hardly, but I swear to you, even Obj would have said something was he president the day Fela died....silly as it would have been.

I'm sure that most people who are grieving Michael Jackson's death do not need validation from public figures via their statements to recognise how important he was to their lives.
I don't see it as something to get worked up over.
A brilliant contribution.?? Not!

Thank God the super star was not from Naija.
Perhaps there's something we are yet to understand about this guy called Barack Obama.

| Re: Shock And Grief Over Jackson’s Death R.I.P micheal joseph jackson,we will deeply miss you, for all the peace and joy you gave us through your legendry performance. All members of the nvs wish that peace be with your soul. For every action one undertakes in oder to be what one is not, there is always a reaction, and it might be of grivious consequence. For those the gods want to kill they first make deaf, and many of us are witness to the facial and physical transformations of MJ,we also bear testimony of all the cosmelogical and dermerlogical can of worms that precided that singular act,and of course, the end to any rational and objective mind would know that even as we mourne micheal, his legacy will live for a long time, but his death was not a surprise.R.I.P micheal joseph jackson.I will for ever be your fan. |

| Re: Shock And Grief Over Jackson’s Death Obama or no Obama MJ is dead and I hope he is in a far better place resting than we sorry souls on this beautiful earth that we have destroyed.
Also who is to say Obama has not already offered his condolescenes, not everything has to be made public. I see some twisted and perverse minds on here and the media are already trying to cook up stories surrounding MJ's death.
In their evil mindset they just cannot believe they dont have a 'typical' pop star dying in tragic circumstances to sell to their sad gullible readership.
Unfortunately for them so far it shows there was no foul play just like the trumped up charges against MJ were false. R.I.P MJ. |

| Re: Shock And Grief Over Jackson’s Death Obama was last week accused of been a celebrity or too In the media, In short he was reminded that he Is the President of United States of America not a celebrity. Am sure that was well debated In this forum last week. The first opportunity Obama has to reduce his Celebrity status, he Is now accused of acting Presidential. Imagine the Impact of a statement from him within the first 48hrs, It will likely relegate the focus from Michael to him by the media.
Abeg leave our presido alone….. MJ was there before Obama and will live long long after Obama through his music….
The concept of Black community Is a creation of the white press. Most black people In the U.S.A make and take decisions independently without going to seek advice from any imaginary Black leader….. Obama has not failed any test with regards to his black constituency. He was not voted In to office by Black Americans but by a united and progressive American population that has all races including Whites from Southern states that are descendants of Slave Masters.
Rev. Al Sharpton spoke eloquently on behalf of large segment of Black Constituency. At an appropriate time and date Our President will speak on behalf of all Americans. Am glad Obama has passed his first test regarding Black related Issue. Michael Jackson, Chuck Berry, Little Richards & Sammy Davis Jr unlike James Brown, Marvin Gye & Curtis Mayfield transcended their race to much diverse audience ( Note: am not talking about commercial success).

I am 99% sure he woulda done that. But we will never know and thats good as the family may not fancy throwing that to CNN.
Its not all bad. Obama, I am sure, isnt that stupid else he wouldnt be here.
I think we are all greving hard....

.....just as Michael Jackson is being celebrated by people of all races. Please, MJ should not be reduced to a black prodigy. He was and still is far greater than that. Obama, IMO, should have sent his condolences to the Jacksons but it has nothing to do with both of them being members of a black race.

What has acknowledging the loss of an American Icon got to with acting like a celebrity or the color of their skin?
He need not even be on TV to issue such statement, a Press Release by White House Press Secretary on behalf of the President would do. How can Obama one or two sentences aknowledging the loss overshadow the death of MJ. Pls folks you should stop these lame excuses for Obama.
There are stll some shady spots in his politics that I still do not understand. I am afraid for his second term. He may need Iwu's services.
It is a shame, he has not spoken up.
