Exclamation time Magazine and tableleaux of Nollywood (Graphic!)

This in my own opinion is demeaning! I'm not a fan of Nigerian movies but we can't be this bad!!!

Interesting pictures. Also noteworthy that even TIME admits the industry is estimated at half a billion dollars!

You mean the movies actually had "those" kind of scenes?

There is nothing spectacular in the TIME pictures.go around our urban centres and see live Nollywood gory pictures of people begging for a living with their wounds and disabilities.if the Govt cant discourage those people by taking good care of them, whats wrong if Nollywood holds up a mirror of happenings in our society for the world at large to see?

I have seem some movies where heads were cut off, brandished & used for ritual purposes but I think the photographer was being artistic with the pictures. Some of the names mentioned I never heard of, I was expecting the Nollywood A-list.
Strange how Time said Nollywood plots usually involve bribery, witchcraft & prostitution & yet we banned District -9.

Demeaning does not seem to be the right word, but unbalanced! These films reflect what used to be (or still is) reality in the land after all. However the selected heavily made-up characters in these images seem taken from only the horror or crime products of Nollywood, none at all from the bright and positive films.

I agree with you about it being unbalanced. Btw Hollywood movies have been known to have far more scary/gory character than those up there.

Madam Akinyuli needs to see these photographs, she needs to demand and get an apology from Time's parent company just as she got an "apology" from Sony. Additionally, she should order the immediate arrest of whoever is responsible for this (fatwa is preferable).

The photographs were horrific to say the least.

That collection should be renamed: A misrepresentation of Nollywood. I was in Nigeria for the month of July and watched so many Nigerian movies on African Magic. Yes they are not of first class quality, but they are sure not that photographer has shown, not even the movies set in the village. Its not just unbalanced, its absurd and stupid. It seems like a calculated attempt to demean Nollywood movies. Fortunately, as I noted above, the whole of Africa watches Nollywood movies on MNet and they know the truth. I am going to look for the chaps website and complain about his "artwork"

I think the photographer is a classic case of one who is attracted to the negative. The man seems to be attracted to bad things and images...

Guess who this is supposed to be...

      Robert Mugabe

Now these people seem like perfect candidates for a horror movie...

Finally having been to the man's website, I can see his mindset. Its strange, to put it mildly. This maybe a picture of himself in Nigeria.

There are more gaphic pictures in the whole exhibit here. SO check out the man's website. And it seems the fellow with have the Nollywood pictures in exhibition in New York early next year.

These are all clear examples of staged photograpy, the new fad amongst western photographers. while his pictures leaned towards tyhe maccabre, I doubt if his captions are too far from the truth. But he should and will be visited on his site and told to look towards saner artforms

These are pictures from a particular genre of movies and I do not see anything wrong with them. There are fringe movies from all over the world and they have their following.

The lead actor in Ecuus (spelling?) found religion and became ascetic after the movie which was major box office hit and Armity Ville Horror was popular for years and rmour has it that the little girl who played the part lost her mind when she saw it.

The make-up is improving as I hope will the acting and the sripts, in time

'Nollywood' has been around for barely 2 decades...Operating all the while with little or no institutional support from the government. Totally private driven while related laws are made "as we go". Lucrative while providing serious employments. They surely can do better but taking into consideration the environment they operate on daily basis, some of the harsh criticisms are unfair. It is obvious the photographer had his personal agneda when he hired some bystanders for his horror shots. Not that we dont see scarry and irrelevant stuffs in some of these movies but being ranked amongst the top earners globally after such a short period of activity should draw more balanced criticisms and not scorn. Apart from oil and nollywood, which other sector of the Nigerian economy competes seriously on the global level? 419?
