Kunle Awosiyan, Lagos
Saturday, October 31, 2009
LAGOS State government on Friday recorded another breakthrough as its partner, a transformer manufacturing company, the El-Sewedy, located in Ibereko Badagry, released its first set of locally made transformers.
The Commissioner for Rural development, Prince Lanre Balogun, made this known at a news conference, adding that the Egyptian company had since supplied the government with 15 transformers.
Balogun, accompanied by his counterpart for information and strategy, Mr. Opeyemi Bamidele, said that the local transformer was made of copper material instead of aluminum and would be distributed to communities free.
According to him, it was the first time a transformer would be made locally, adding, “This will go a long way to reduce the problem of epileptic supply of electricity in the state.”
The transformer, Balogun noted, is a dry cell type, saying that it was more durable than most of the imported ones and would be available in open market in the nearest future.
Commenting, the Special Adviser to the state governor on commerce and industry, Mrs. Sola Oworu, said that the establishment of transformer manufacturing company was one of the plans of the government to solve the problem of power supply in the state.
According to her, the company would be producing about 100 transformers for 18 months and will go on large scale production in the nearest future.
“Our plan is to export it and supply adequately to satisfy our local needs,” Oworu said.

Hopefully this will help reduce the epileptic power supply system in Lagos and hopefully it will be of good standard comparing to those older ones that use to errupt (blow-up) at no given time before.
This is a good thing anyway as all the populace can not depend or singularly afford solar power energy for their individual use.
Great achievement.

.
Newclime in Port Harcourt also makes transformers & they been doing it for some years now but their max rating is 500KVA. http://www.newclime.com/Docs/product...ame=Electrical
There was also another company in Lagos that was making transformers, I can't really remember the name but I did get a quotation from them sometime ago while tendering for a job.

The term "made in Lagos" sounds like Oshodi language.is it assembled in Lagos?whats the country of origin?whats the performance rating?there are not many made-in-lagos items i will pay my hardearned cash for.if the lagos boy says "i am coming",he has taken off! what about spare parts for the transformer? and price wise, how competitive? when we get answers to these,we may celebrate, afterall, propaganda can not power transformer! |

I thought you had better read the article to understand that it was indeed the commissioner that gave this information about the collaborative effort btween the Lagos State govt and their partners gave birth to the transformer of a thing. __________________ Give me praying men and I will give you revival.

Transformers don't produce power, they either step it up or down(Voltage) depending on the circumstance in which it needs to be used.
The only plus is that production of transformers locally would stop imports & impact on the economy vis a vis jobs, taxes, downtime etc; that is if the powers that be can get it right.

I understand, knowing how things work in our great country don't you think it would have been appropriate if they had invested in other sources of power supply such as solar or wind-mill atleast this would creat more jobs and get things running.
To me its like buying a good car and locking it up in the garrage because theres no road or fuel to run it. The power that be can never get it right |

Ray,
In a way you are right, the Lagos state government should have also invested in alternative sources of power generation along with the transformer production. The company for now I suspect is only producing LV(Low Voltage Transformers), which are the end distribution transformers in streets, small communities & villages. For now I doubt they can handle the Transformers which are used at the power generation & transmission ends which are basically HV(High Voltage) & MV(Medium Voltage) & the contracts for those are monopolies of PHCN/FGN.
All in all if the government can ban imports of transformers for their range of production it could encourage them to diversify into higher ranges plus spin offs like feeder pillars, bus bars, etc. But Nigerians love imports & that's the problem.

Ray,
There is energy generation and there is energy distribution. One of the greatest challenges of energy sector in Nigeria is not just the generation but the distribution as well.
This is why we must commend this effort.

| Re: Made-in-Lagos Transformer Hits Market We have heard enough talk .
I am no longer moved by all this news items.
When there is uninterrupted power for 24 hrs in just one section of Lagos, somebody should tell us.Enough of all this hype.
Didn't someone come up with a cure for AIDS sometime ago in the same Lagos?
Did preachers in the same Lagos not predict a God sent leader that will turn Nigeria around?
Didn't an Hausa man manufacture helicopters from scrap metal sometime ago, where has that gone.
