Nigerian whizkid steals $1.1 million from 150 American bankers

Tuesday, 03 November 2009 00:00 Nigerian Compass

A Nigerian computer whizkid, Adeniyi Adeyemi, has been charged with stealing the identities of more than 150 former colleagues at the Bank of New York Mellon, using the information to pilfer over $1.1 million (about N165 million) from charities, non-profit groups and other institutions.

According to Manhattan prosecutors, Adeyemi, of Crown Heights , was employed for three months as a computer technician contractor at the headquarters of the bank in 2001 when he was 19 years.

He was arraigned in State Supreme Court before Justice Carol Berkman.

The scam started in November 2001 and lasted till April of this year.

It was during his employment that he stole the personal identifying information of dozens of Bank of New York employees, mainly in the Information Technology (IT) department, where he was assigned, said Manhattan District Attorney, Robert M. Morgenthau.

Over the next few years, he used this information to open over 30 bank and brokerage accounts in their identities with firms including E-Trade, Fidelity, Citi, Wachovia, and Washington Mutual.

The accounts served as dummies for receiving stolen funds.

Adeyemi, now 27, stole money from the bank accounts of charities and non-profit organisations and funnelled it into the dummy accounts, later withdrawing the stolen funds or transferring them to a second layer of dummies.

He was assisted in the theft because, in the interests of facilitating donations, many charities put their banking details on the Internet, making them easy prey for unauthorised withdrawals by identity thieves, particularly those with computer expertise such as Adeyemi.

Adeyemi was also accused of stealing from Bank of New York employees.

Morgenthau said that the suspect changed the contact information associated with their online banking profiles, took control of their accounts and wired money to dummies.

Wiring just under $10,000 at a time to avoid hitting the threshold at which all financial institutions must report transactions to the US Treasury, he is accused of stealing more than $128,000 from staff.

Among other purchases, Adeyemi used these stolen proceeds to buy additional postal service money orders worth more than $100,000.

The New York/New Jersey Electronic Crimes Task Force of the United States Secret Service began surveillance on Adeyemi after tracing suspicious Internet activity at his apartment.

A search of the apartment in April uncovered dozens of Bank of New York employees’ credit reports on his computer, along with many other documents containing personal identifying information of more than 150 staff.

The investigative team also found notebooks containing hundreds of names, social security numbers, account numbers, and other personal data, along with numerous credit cards in Bank of New York employees’ names in a storage locker Adeyemi rented.

In a 149-count indictment, Adeyemi was charged with grand larceny, identity theft, money laundering, scheme to defraud, computer tampering and unlawful possession of personal identification information.

Among the charities Adeyemi is said to have stolen from are Goodwill Industries, Iris Ministries, the Kalgidhar Trust, the Sudanese American Community Development Organisation, Ravi Zacharias International Ministries, the American Community School at Beirut, the Jacksonville Humane Society, American Friends of Birdlife International, the International Association of Women Judges, the Space Generation Advisory Council and the American Association for Clinical Chemistry.

Kevin Heine, a spokesman for Bank of New York Mellon, said in a statement, “We strongly support the investigation and actions taken by the district attorney’s office, and are fully cooperating.”

You should speak for yourself You can bury your head in shame and lower your tail... Mr. Adeniyi Adeyemi does not speak for 150 million decent and hardworking law abiding Nigerians... he does not represent me or speak for me...

I do and would not define my decency by his anti social behavior and I would not allow anyone to define me or other Nigerians by Adeniyi Adeyemi's criminal enterprise. I refuse and reject any negative labels and or castigation as a consequence of this criminal.

Ms. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie would call Mr. Adeniyi Adeyemi's criminal conduct a single story... by which all Nigerians should not be measured....

OR Let the New York, let the United States and let the world measure 150 million Nigerians by the good acts of good and decent Nigerians

Ka chineke mezie okwu!

ermmmm......There is an explanation. Our role models and so called leaders are thieves. If you steal public or corporate funds in Nigeria, people will be hailing you. They will give you honourary title for chopping (eating). Thieving has been sanitised into chopping in Nigeria. Can you blame anyone for chopping?

In Nigeria people wear thieving as a badge of honour. Rob one public institution and you be offered another public institution to loot. Soludo was a crooked CBN Governor. They now want to annoint him as the governor of Anambra state so that he can loot their treasury too.

Again, just b/c his name is Niyi Adeyemi does not make him as Nigerian. For all we know, the guy could be from Benin Republic. So it will be more correct to call him who he really is.

Yeah, at least hopefully, he would still have his fake American accent with which he'd con his countrymen out of their hard earned money. Anything Tokunbo sells like magic here, even an ex convict with American accent.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT!

http://nigeriavillagesquare.com/foru...-teacher-.html

Nigerian Teacher Rejects-n1-2-million-overpayment

She is Mrs. Leah Adesola Fasua.

In a rare act of honesty, 65-year old Madam Fasua last week turned down a N2 million retirement benefit paid her by the Ondo State Government because “my money is not up to that.”

While at the Akure designated centre for the collection of the money being paid out to all retired primary school teachers, Mrs. Fasua preened through her lenses when offered the N2 million cheque and promptly replied the attendants, “no, what is in your document is that my retirement benefit remains N815, 000. So why offer me a N2 million cheque?”

She simply dropped the cheque and tried walking away in anger. But the paymasters called her back, checked the document to verify her claim and behold, she was right!

A government official somewhere had made a mistake and that was how Mrs. Fasua would have been a million, one hundred and eighty-five thousand naira richer.

Ondo State Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Wale Akinterinwa, was promptly informed of Fasua’s heroic act, prompting the state government to put in proper checks with a view to ensuring that such a mistake was not repeated.

Sources also said Mrs. Fasua got a mention of applause during the state’s exco meeting, during which Governor Segun Mimiko reportedly remarked, “this woman’s act has done me proud.”

While speaking with National LIFE, however, Mrs. Fasua said, “I only did the right thing because that money was not mine and it was not proper that I should collect it.”

When reminded of the craze for money culminating in dishonest acts common with many nowadays, the woman simply responded, “I was a teacher for over 33 years and I’d taught my children (pupils) to live honest lives; so why would I deviate from what I’ve taught others?” She asked rhetorically.

Mrs. Adesola Fasua, incidentally, is the mother of Mr. Kayode Fasua, the News Editor of National LIFE. She is married to Mr. Gabriel Adelekun Fasua, a 72-year old journalist. She also has another son, Mr. Wale Honey Fasua, who is a pastor and gospel musician based in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

Although a teacher, she has also been a freelance journalist, thus sensationally presenting ‘three musketeers’ of husband, wife and son as Journalists.

Commenting on her rare act, Akinsuyi, the Special Duties Commissioner, said, “I’m not really surprised because that is what we are noted for in Ondo State.

This Nov. 1, 2009 file photo provided by the Cleveland Police Department shows Anthony Sowell, 50, who Cleveland Police arrested Saturday, Oct. 31 on a rape and felonious assault warrant. The number of bodies found in and near a rapist's home rose to at least 10 on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, when authorities unearthed four corpses from the backyard and found a skull in a bucket in the basement. CLEVELAND — A rapist who lived at a Cleveland house where 10 bodies were found has been ordered held without bond.

Anthony Sowell appeared Wednesday before Municipal Court Judge Ronald Adrine (AY'-dreen) on five counts of aggravated murder.

The 50-year-old Sowell looked straight at the judge as a prosecutor asked that he be held without bond and described him as an "incredibly dangerous threat to the public."

Sowell has been in jail since last week after police recovered the bodies of six women from his home.

Authorities dug up four more bodies Tuesday and found a skull in his basement.

Police plan to resume a search of the house Wednesday and expand their search of vacant homes in the neighborhood.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Police are expanding their search of a convicted rapist's neighborhood and his neatly kept home, where 10 bodies have been found in the basement, buried in the backyard, in an upstairs living room and in a crawl space.

In addition to the four latest bodies they found buried in the backyard of Anthony Sowell's home on Tuesday, authorities found a skull wrapped in paper inside a bucket in the basement.

Sowell, 50, a registered sex offender, was charged Tuesday with five counts of aggravated murder and, in a Sept. 22 attack that led to the search of his home, with rape, felonious assault and kidnapping. He wasn't at the house when police arrived Thursday but was arrested Saturday blocks from his home.

Sowell is scheduled to make his first court appearance Wednesday on the charges. Police, asked if Sowell was cooperating, said Tuesday night that he had asked for an attorney. Court records didn't indicate who was representing him.

Investigators worked late into the evening Tuesday searching the Sowell property, squeezed between a sausage store and another house in an inner-city neighborhood of aging homes, some boarded up and abandoned.

Police searched vacant homes within a quarter-mile Tuesday, looking for more bodies. Police Chief Michael McGrath ordered the search expanded another quarter mile and said firefighters also will search in the walls and floors of Sowell's home on Wednesday.

"It appears that this man had an insatiable appetite that he had to fill," McGrath said.

The Cuyahoga County coroner hasn't identified any of the bodies but is trying to do so through DNA and dental records. The six found last week were black, and five were strangled.

"What kind of man was this?" wondered Regina Woodland, who lives about two blocks away. "He couldn't have been human."

A crowd of around 100 people milled about and chatted near the home Tuesday evening. A short while later, around 50 people joined hands and put their arms around each other in the middle of the street and prayed aloud.

One of those in the crowd, Antoinnette Dudley, 29, lives a few houses away. She said she could smell a terrible odor like something was dead all summer. She said she saw Sowell only a few times, mainly drinking beer while he sat on his porch.

"I didn't think he was that sick," she said.

As a registered sex offender, Sowell was required to check in regularly at the sheriff's office. Officers didn't have the right to enter his house, but they would stop by to make sure he was there. Their most recent visit was Sept. 22, just hours before the woman reported being raped.

For the past few years, Sowell's neighbors thought the foul smell enveloping their street corner had been coming from a brick building where workers churned out sausage and head cheese. It got so bad that the owners of Ray's Sausage replaced their sewer line and grease traps.

It sounds like the sort of romantic-mystery potboiler that keeps readers on the edge of their summer beach chairs: A strikingly pretty Florida housewife with a handsome husband and two beautiful young daughters is kidnapped, sexually assaulted, and held for $50,000 ransom.

Or was she?

Prosecutors contend the strange case of 37-year-old Quinn Gray, who claims she was abducted and held for four days in hellish captivity, is a cleverly planned ruse. They claim her supposed abductor, a 25-year-old Bosnian immigrant, was actually her lover, and that the pair plotted to extort cash from Quinn’s well-heeled husband, Reid.

Quinn Gray and her alleged lover, Jasmin Osmanovic, are charged with extortion. But two of her lawyers appeared on TODAY Tuesday to say that Gray, who has a history of mental illness, is a terrorized victim, not a scheming co-conspirator. The case has set the community around Jacksonville, Fla., abuzz.

‘Please do this, honey’
No one is arguing the basics of the case. Quinn Gray went missing the Friday of Labor Day weekend. A ransom note, written in Quinn’s handwriting, was found tacked to the front door of the Gray’s $4 million home, stating: “There are three men holding me right now, and they want $50,000 cash. Stay at the house NO COPS! Keep your cell phone on you. Keep the kids with you. Please do this honey, please!”

But authorities believe it was all trickery. They believe Gray was having an affair with Osmanovic that began when the two met in June at a gas station where Osmanovic worked, and that the pair cooked up a fake kidnapping plot.

“It became more and more evident to really everybody involved that there was something far more complex and involved than a kidnapping,” St. Johns County Sheriff David Shoar told NBC. “Quinn Gray was not kidnapped.”

Authorities cite, among other things, the manager of the hotel where Gray was allegedly being held saying she “didn’t seem to be in distress at all,” and a 90-minute audiotape they say captured the sounds of Gray and Osmanovic in the throes of passion, and then plotting the details of a fake kidnapping.

Mental illness, substance abuse
But Gray attorney Mark Miller has a simple explanation: Quinn Gray is a very sick woman. Miller told Matt Lauer live on TODAY, “Her reaction to the kidnapping, it may seem bizarre, but it’s all explained by her mental illness.”

Miller says psychiatric problems run in Gray’s family, and that she tried to mask her own emotional problems by abusing alcohol. Gray checked in to the renowned Hazelden clinic in Minnesota last June to receive treatment, but when she checked out in July, she was a virtual mental powder keg, her attorneys say.

“Quinn has grown up with a stigma against recognizing what she was going through,” Miller told Lauer. “She self-medicated for much of her adult life with alcohol; that led to a substance abuse problem. In the middle of the summer, she was treated for alcoholism.

“When she came back, for the next six weeks she was untreated, undiagnosed and she was no longer self-medicating. She was in a manic phase of her bipolar disorder when she was kidnapped.”

That made Quinn Gray easy pickings for the likes of Osmanovic, Miller contends. He said that when the case goes to court, he will move to have the incriminating audiotape tossed out under rape shield laws. Far from being a tape of two people making love, then scheming to collect $50,000, said Miller, the tape is actually “an audio recording of a woman who has been kidnapped, abducted and being raped.”

Standing by his wife
For now, Quinn Gray is at a psychiatric facility on St. Simons Island in Georgia, and Osmanovic is in jail. Attorney Rick Jancha, also representing Gray, told Lauer Tuesday that she is “doing rather well. Of course she’s very anxious about what’s going on. She’s in the middle of her treatment.”

And Reid Gray is standing by his wife, both believing her version of the events and bankrolling her defense. In a statement, he said, “This has been an extraordinarily traumatic experience for me and my entire family. I am deeply concerned over how this incident has, and will continue to, affect our children. I love my family and will do whatever I can to make sure that Quinn receives all of the help and support that she needs.”

Osmanovic continues to assert to authorities that he and Gray had a six-week relationship that included trysts at his gas station, at a hotel and even at her home. He says Gray made him a house key and gave him the home’s security code — and gave him a cover story to use if anyone came to the door while he was there.

Miller asserts that Osmanovic’s claims, and the prosecutor’s contention that the pair were having an affair, are bogus.

“Not one e-mail, not one text message, not one cell phone record — there is nothing that supports their contention that it’s a faked kidnapping,” Miller said.

AND, Nigerians are responsible for violent gun crimes in the United States! Or, there are criminals and a few good people ... everywhere on earth?

Handgun Ban Backgrounder

On the average, if someone gets shot and killed, four out of five times it will be with a handgun. In 1997, for example, handguns were used in 79.4 percent of all firearm homicides.10

From 1990 to 1997, handguns were used in a majority (55.6 percent) of all homicides; that is, they were used in murder more than all other weapons combined.11

From 1990 to 1997, there were 293,781 firearm deathshomicides, suicides, and unintentional shootings.12

From 1990 to 1997 in the United States there were more than

* 160,000 homicides

* 110,000 firearm homicides

* 89,000 handgun homicides13

America's gun problem is a handgun problem. Handguns exact an inordinate toll on American lives. The vast majority of gun death and injuryin homicides, suicides, and unintentional shootingsis carried out with easily concealable pistols and revolvers. The public health model as well as the traditional approaches employed in protecting consumer health and safety lead to one inevitable conclusion: handguns should be banned.

Firearms

There are an estimated 192 million firearms in civilian hands.1 Yet, fewer and fewer Americans own more and more guns.

Surprisingly, only 25 percent of adults own a firearm. Of these, three out of four own more than one gun.2

About 10 percent of the adult population owns 77 percent of the total stock of firearms.3

Handguns

There are about 65 million handguns in the United States. Handguns make up 34 percent of all types of firearms.4

Of all firearm-related crime, 86 percent involved handguns.5

Only one in six Americans own handguns.6

Unlike manufacturers of other consumer products, the industry that makes handguns is unregulated for health and safety.

Overall Firearm-Related Deaths

Since 1962, more than one million Americans have died in firearm homicides, suicides, and unintentional shootings. Handguns were used in more than 650,000 of these fatal shootings.7

In 1997the most recent year availablethere were 89 firearm deaths per day, or a firearm death every 16 minutes.8

In homes with guns, a member of the household is almost three times as likely to be the victim of a homicide compared to gun-free homes.9

Handguns and Homicide

On the average, if someone gets shot and killed, four out of five times it will be with a handgun. In 1997, for example, handguns were used in 79.4 percent of all firearm homicides.10

From 1990 to 1997, handguns were used in a majority (55.6 percent) of all homicides; that is, they were used in murder more than all other weapons combined.11

From 1990 to 1997, there were 293,781 firearm deathshomicides, suicides, and unintentional shootings.12

From 1990 to 1997 in the United States there were more than

* 160,000 homicides

* 110,000 firearm homicides

* 89,000 handgun homicides13

Handgun homicides hit record highs in the early 1990s, peaking in 1993. That year there were 13,258 such killingsout of a total of 16,120 firearm homicides.14

As part of an overall drop in crime, in 1997 handgun homicides fell to 8,503.15

Suicide

The largest category of firearms fatality is suicide, not homicide. In 1997, 54 percent of all gun deaths were suicides, and 42 percent were homicides.16

About six out of 10 suicides are committed with firearms.17

For firearm suicides, it is estimated that handguns are used twice as often (69 percent) as rifles and shotguns.18

For all suicides, it is estimated that more than four out of 10 were committed with handguns.19

From 1990 to 1997

* there were more than 147,000 suicides committed with a firearm

* an estimated 90,000 involved a handgun20

People living in a household with a gun are almost five times more likely to die by suicide than people living in a gun-free home.21

Self Defense

For every time a gun in the home is used in a self-defense homicide, a gun will be used in

* 1.3 unintentional deaths

* 4.6 criminal homicides

* 37 suicides22

In 1997 there were 15,690 homicides.

* Of these, 8,503 were committed with handguns.

* Among handgun homicides, only 193 (2.3 percent) were classified as justifiable homicides by civilians.23

For every time in 1997 that a civilian used a handgun to kill in self-defense, 43 people lost their lives in handgun homicides alone.24

Costs

For every firearm death, there are nearly three gun injuries requiring emergency medical treatment.25

By conservative estimates, gunshot injuries cost about $4 billion a year in medical expenses.26

Public Attitudes

Polls over the past 20 years have consistently shown that one out of three Americans support a ban on handgun possession (except by law enforcement officers).27

Several polls taken in 1999 show this level of support reaching as high as 44 percent to 50 percent.28

The Second Amendment

No gun control law has ever been overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court on Second Amendment grounds. Such laws include federal bans on machine guns and semiautomatic assault weapons as well as local community bans on the sale and possession of handguns.

Every federal Court of Appeals that has considered the meaning of the Second Amendment has held that it protects the right of states to maintain a militia, not an individual right to own a gun.

* In 1981 the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals stated that "possession of a handgun by individuals is not part of the right to keep and bear arms."

* In 1976 the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals noted "the erroneous supposition that the Second Amendment is concerned with the rights of individuals rather than those of the states."29

Former New York City police Commissioner Bernard Kerik

Kerik Pleads Guilty in Corruption Case
By Sam Dolnick http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/20...ads-guilty/?hp
Manuel Balce Ceneta/Associated Press Former New York City police Commissioner Bernard Kerik in June.

Bernard B. Kerik, a former New York police commissioner, pleaded guilty to eight felonies in a Federal District Court in White Plains on Thursday morning. Mr. Kerik, who will be sentenced in February, faces 27 to 33 months in prison.

Wearing a blue suit and a red tie, Mr. Kerik, with a subdued expression, appeared in the packed courtroom and said, “Guilty, your honor,” as each of the charge were read by Judge Stephen C. Robinson. Throughout the 90-minute proceeding, Mr. Kerik’s lawyer, Michael F. Bachner, rubbed the defendant’s back in support.

Mr. Kerik, 54, pleaded guilty to two counts of tax fraud, one count of making a false statement on a loan application — the most serious — and five separate counts of making false statements to the federal government. These last charges stemmed from statements Mr. Kerik made to the White House during the vetting process after the Bush administration nominated him to lead the Department of Homeland Security. He later withdrew his name.

One charge that had been expected, depriving the public of his honest services as a government official, was not addressed.

Judge Robinson asked Mr. Kerik a series questions to be sure he was aware of his rights. Mr. Kerik, who was jailed in October, had been planning to fight the charges in court. Sentencing was set for Feb. 14. Mr. Bachner said he would ask that Mr. Kerik be freed on bail prior to that, and the judge said he would be receptive to such a request.

The case against Mr. Kerik centers on claims that a construction company suspected of having ties to organized crime paid for much of the renovation work at Mr. Kerik’s home in Riverdale, in the Bronx, in the hope that he would help the company obtain a city license.
