      TONY ITA ETIM, Enugu

South East Governors Forum has endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan for the 2011 presidential election.

Anambra State governor who is chairman of the forum, Peter Obi announced this in Government House Enugu after a meeting of the governors.

In a statement issued after their meeting, the governors said: Following the formal declaration by His Excellency, Goodluck Jonathan, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to vie for the post of President of the nation in the coming election, and in keeping with our earlier decision to support for Presidency, a candidate with the best programme that will address the marginalization of the south east zone and political imbalance in Nigeria, (we have decided) to support the presidential bid of His Excellency.

To urge all delegates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the zone to vote en bloc for the President Jonathan/Namadi Sambo ticket in the forthcoming presidential primaries of the party.

The governors commended Jonathan for formalising the international status of Akanu Ibiam Airport, Enugu and for giving directives for the construction of a new terminal building for the airport.

The governors also expressed delight that the process for award of contracts for the erosion and ecological disaster sites in the zone is being expedited.

On the continued strike by staff of state-owned universities in the zone, they appealed to the workers through the respective state chapters of their unions to meet with the committees already set up by the state governments to negotiate and ensure amicable resolution of the matter.
In the interim, they further appealed that the universities be re-opened for normal academic activities in the interest of the students.

The governors warned groups and organisations in the zone to desist from using the governors names when organising summits and conferences without the knowledge and clearance of the governors.

They pleaded that any such persons or groups of persons should ensure that they obtained clearance before using the names and offices of the governors.

On the security situation in the zone, the governors called on the Inspector- General of Police and other security operatives not to relent in their efforts and to pay special attention to the two main commercial cities in the zone- Aba and Onitsha.

Denker, First of all, there is no such thing as FSU the epicentre of wisdom as I never claimed to be a know-all. That said, Peter Obi is Ojukwu's protege and Ojukwu has spoken his mind. So Obi cannot go against his benefactor's wish unless Ojukwu was mocking IBB the way he mocked Awo as the best pres naija never had. Until then, Bro Denker, this news na fabu.

What we read in the press last weekend was that Dim Ojukwu was tactical and diplomatic with IBB during that visit.he was said to have said his own party too had a presidential candidate and was non commital to IBB.but if IBB propagandists wish to delude themselves that Ojukwu would save IBB s back in the South East during the 2011 elections, its their right to delude themselves.
      Thanked by: FSU.

      FSU,
That piece of news was in May. Events have overtaken that. Many Ndigbo protested vehemently in public and private against Dim Ojukwu after the statement. Remember Ojukwu had taken seriously ill for sometime having survived stroke and partially blind.

I was refering to a newspiece after IBB himself visited Ojukwu in Enugu recently. If you read the statement from Dim Ojukwu on that visit, it was a 419 statement.

Remember the first place IBB visited was Obasanjo's house in Abeokuta. He wanted OBJ to support him in his presidential bid. OBJ promised him nothing. It has now come to the fore that after trying without success to gain OBJ's support, he wanted OBJ to promise to be neutral. I think probably OBJ promised to be neutral but his activities since then has been quite the opposite to the chagrin of IBB.

IBB started calling OBJ names after that. It was in desperation that he sought that meeting with Dim Ojukwu. Ojukwu now realises he was the second choice hence he was non-commital sa he did in May. Ojukwu has also realised that he would be going against the grain of popular Igbo opinion, hence his speech on IBB's visit was really dodgy.

Events will always overtake events. So wait until the last event to see where Ojukwu belongs. Thanks.

Are you saying here that Ojukwu has no abiding principles?

Ekwueme, Soludo, Nwobodo, others defy security
Font size: Yusuf Alli, Chris Oji and Emma Mgbeahurike 28/09/2010 00:00:00
      Ekwueme and Soludo

Security men locked out some Igbo politicians and leaders in Owerri, Imo State yesterday, but they still met and issued a communique that the Igbo should produce the President in 2015.

They said they might negotiate with any power bloc that could guarantee their demand.

There were clear indications that the Igbo leaders may favour a Northern candidate in 2011 to make their dream of 2015 presidency a reality.

The decision of the Igbo leaders has caused a major worry for loyalists of President Goodluck Jonathan.

This is coming against the background of Sunday’s decision of the Southeast governors endorsing Jonathan for the PDP ticket. The Speakers of the Houses of Assembly in the zone have also endorsed the President.

After the Concorde Hotel venue of the meeting had been sealed off, the conferees, led by former Vice President Alex Ekwueme, gathered in the premises of the hotel in the open.

Under the scorching sun, their heads covered by umbrellas, they addressed delegates. They defied the heavy presence of policemen.

At the summit were former Central Bank Governor Prof. Charles Soludo; former Senate President Chief Ken Nnamani; former Governor of Imo State Chief Achike Udenwa and former Governor of Ebonyi State, Dr. Sam Egwu.

Others are: Former Governor of the old Anambra State, Chief Jim Nwobodo; former Governor of Anambra State Dr. Chris Ngige; former Minister of Health Prof. A. B. C. Nwosu; former Minister of State (Foreign Affairs), Chief Dubem Onyia; former Minister of Education, Amb Aja Nwachukwu; former Minister of Aviation Mrs Chinwe Obaji; Senator Ben Obi, George Obiozor, Chyna Iwuanynwu and Udenta Udenta.

After some altercations with the security agents, the leaders decided to hold the conference in the open.

Ekwueme lamented that the meeting, which was purely to deliberate on the fate of the Igbo in the unfolding political drama, was being seen as a clandestine activity.

Speaking in Igbo, the former Vice President regretted that the conference was misconstrued to be a forum for endorsing of presidential aspirants.

Nwobodo said it was an insult to say "that we have come to pick a candidate for the Igbo."

The decision of the Ekwueme group to demand for Igbo’s turn in 2015 attracted jubilation in the camps of ex-military president Gen. Ibrahim Babangida and ex-Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

Policemen and State Security Service (SSS) man had since Saturday cordoned off the hotel.

Even an alternative arrangement to hold the summit at nearby All Seasons Hotel was aborted as security agents early yesterday morning chained the door leading to the hotel’s hall, slamming a huge padlock on it.

The Imo State Commissioner of Police said he was not aware of the summit. Police spokesman Linus Nwaiwu said the police were not under any instruction to stop any meeting.

His words: "Maybe those who stopped them were on routine patrol. I’m not in the picture of what actually happened; I am yet to be briefed in respect of the perceived incident."

Imo State Governor Ikedi Ohakim also disssociated the government from the abortion of the Summit.

"The state government wishes to state that all such insinuations are borne out of mere mischief and an attempt to stain the existing cordial relationship between Governor Ohakim and the leadership of the Igbo political establishment," a statement by Chief Ethelbert Okere, Special Adviser, Public Enlightenment and Documentary said.

The summit, convened by former Chair of the Police Service Commission Chief Simon Okeke, was according to the organizers, to discuss the future of the Igbo regarding 2011 and 2015.

In the communiqué read by Nwanyanwu, the Secretary-General of the conference, the leaders also resolved to mobilise the Igbo to appreciate why they should work towards 2015.

Nwanyanwu, who was flanked by Ken Nnamani, Ben Obi, Duben Onyia, Sam Egwu, Achike Udenwa and Prof ABC Nwosu, among others, read the communiqué.

Nwanyanwu said: "The conveners of the conference condemn the attempt made to abort it, frown at this creeping culture of arbitrariness and impunity, and warn that Nigeria’s democracy is under grave threat, if this kind of undemocratic and intolerant attitude is not reined in quickly.

"The conveners of the conference have also resolved that the Igbo 2015 presidency project is non-negotiable and maintain that the equality of the zones must be achieved through the creation of a sixth state in the Southeast under special constitutional regime as was done in the case of the Doctrine of Necessity that elevated Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan to the position of Acting President and as may be accomplished given the INEC’s request for extension of time to conduct the 2011 general elections.

"The conference was designed to re-awaken Igbo political consciousness, re-build the Igbo political base and unite shades of opinions in the quest for the election of a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction in 2015."

A statement by Atiku Campaign Organisation in Abuja yesterday condemned the alleged ill-treatment of Igbo leaders in Owerri.

The statement said: "Former Vice President" condemned the shabby treatment meted out to Igbo patriots, including former Vice-President Alex Ekwueme, former Senate President Ken Nnamani, former Governors Chief Achike Udenwa and Dr. Sam Egwu, Prof ABC Nwosu, Chief Dubem Onyia and Senator Ben Obi, among others, that compelled them to hold their conference in the open air under the sweltering sun.
