May 29: OBJ moves belongings out of Aso Rock
Jacob Segun Olatunji, Abuja - 04.03.2007
Contrary to speculations making the rounds in some quarters that President Olusegun Obasanjo is not ready to leave on May 29, this year, Sunday Tribune can now authoritatively reveal that he has commenced gradual movement of his personal belongings out of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Presidency sources exclusively revealed to Sunday Tribune that the personal belongings of President Obasanjo were being evacuated to his Ota farm in Ogun State, where he had promised to retire after the expiration of his tenure.
The source further revealed that the personal belongings included animals, birds, souvenirs, photographs, clothing materials, books, audio and video cassettees and a host of others.
It was gathered that President Obasanjo reportedly instructed his personal aides to commence the movement of the items to his Ota Farm recently ahead of the May 29, handing-over date, so as not to be done in a hurry.
This is coming just as the National Deputy Chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, (South) Chief Olabode George, dismissed the insinuations in some quarters that President Obasanjo was planning to extend his tenure beyond May 29, this year.
He described it as a mere rumour and urged Nigerians and the international community to disregard the dangerous rumour being peddled to by the opposition, which he said was aimed at discrediting the administration and President Obasanjo.
Chief George, who dispelled the rumour during an interview in Abuja equally declared that the party was not afraid of the Presidential Candidate of the Action Congress, AC, Vice-President Atiku Abubakar in next month’s elections, saying that Atiku was not a match to PDP saying he was actually a product of the PDP.
According to Chief George, there was no way Atiku could be larger than a process that produced him in the first instance and as such, there was no way the PDP could be afraid of him.
Said he, “Who is afraid of Atiku? Who is Atiku? ‘Mind you, he was elected on the platform of the PDP as a state governor and from there he was taken up to become the Vice-President and the rest is history, so how can this same PDP now be afraid of him?”
He declared that the PDP was fully prepared for the April polls and that President Obasanjo would hand over to a democratically elected President come May 29, contrary to speculations being peddled by the opposition that he would not leave.
He pointed out that the PDP had been moving its campaign train round the country under the leadership of President Obasanjo who is also the leader of the party, telling Nigerians what the party would do for them if elected again as contained in the Party’s manifesto unlike other political parties who have been idle, doing nothing, other than busy mis-informing Nigerians.
According to him, “we have manifesto, we have been moving round, selling the manifesto to Nigerians.
“Nigerians will decide which direction they want to go. Nigerians are no longer fools, you cannot take Nigerians for a ride again, let them go out and tell the public their own programmes.
“I know the electorate will know better, PDP is a tested and trusted Party.
Chief George, who is also the Director General of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council, while expressing confidence in the electoral victory of the party, pointed out that rather than the PDP being afraid of Vice-President, that it was Atiku Abubakar who is afraid of the party along with his co-travellers in the AC.
On the constant presence of President Obasanjo at PDP rallies, Chief George pointed out that there was nothing wrong in that, saying that apart from being the leader of the PDP that it would also serve as a concrete evidence that the party was preparing hard for the elections and that the President was ready to quit office come May 29, this year.
