| How Good is Your Cardio?
I used to think I was in great shape just because I get flat stomach (no six packs sha o) and arnold-sized biceps (okay, dat one na big lie ) until my wife suggested that we go for a jog last weekend. My mama dey around (actually for the past 2½ weeks) so we left the kids with her and headed out. Mennnnnn! Come see as this woman take me take do yeye ehn? Kai! KAAAIIIII!!!!!
We started out okay and were on even equal easy pace but walahi, before we jog reach half a mile, come see as man pikin dey pant. Before we reach around 1 mile, 'petrol' done finish pata pata. Na so I bend over hold my knee dey gasp. Come see as sweat dey pour out from every orifice for my body! Meanwhile, na so she stand near be dey jog on the same spot dey halla me say common, lets go. I am like, go where? Mo l'epo ti tan, o d e n's o pe k'ama l o. L o si bo? (I say fuel done finish and you say make we dey go?). Bottom line, I tell am say make she dey jog dey go say I dey waka come from back. Fiam! na so she zoom off o.
The truth of the matter is she is in a far far much better shape than me, cardiovascular wise. This is a woman who alternates between threadmill and taebo every weekday morning before heading out to work while me I manage to catch a few threadmill here and there 2 or 3 times per month during weekends. So what was I thinking agreeing to go for a jog? Anyhow, she jogged up to our predetermined point, turned around and jogged back and caught up with me walking up. We walked and chatted all the way back until it must have been like half a mile before getting home. By then I was fully recharged again then we jogged the rest distance home.
So throughout this week I have been running on threadmill every evening before going to bed and I'm feeling healthier already, walahi! Whether I go fit sustain dat tempo is another tory sha o. We shall see. But we have another jogging appointment tomorrow that I intend on winning this time by all means necessary - even if it mean swallowing steroids (abeg where dem dey see am buy sef) |

My pipul say na for the eating of grass cow take resemble horse, no be for race. Simply put, I lost the race again yesterday evening even though I made it to the predetermined point literally on jet fumes and by sheer willpower.

| Re: How Good is Your Cardio? My brother keep pushing it the greateset exercise a man can do is RUNNING. Running 3 to 5 miles a week with good eating habit will help check your waistline.Running is encompassing in the sense that most of your muscles are at work when you run. My only fear is the knee giving up because a Dr once told me that after 30 the knee starts showing signs of weakeness i don't know how true this.

It is possible, at least that is what my wife told me. She also said running on the threadmill is a whole lot different from running on concrete pavement... and that not all canvas shoes are designed to absorb the shock-loads associated with running.
Thinking about it now, maybe I lost the race because I was running with the wrong shoes (yeah right! ).

| Re: How Good is Your Cardio? Man, don't play with that treadmill!
At the gym where I go, I dey hail myself when I do between 25 and 40 minutes. E get some ladies wey go don start before I get there, go continue when I don finish - lasting over 1 - 1-1/2 hrs! I don't know how they do it!
Anyway, I feel that treadmill is one of the best ways to work the heart for a man and every guy should make the effort.
Long ago, I used to play intense tennis (between 4 to 5 hrs) at a time about once a week. I think that too gave me excellent cardio because a friend of mine who was preparing for a marathon in Hawaii visited me and wanted to keep in regular practice so we went to the local park.
She started running and I accompanied her in order to keep her company. To her surprise, even though I had no such marathon-ish goals, I kept with her for about 8 miles without really breaking a sweat! Those were the days! Now na ambulance dem dey take comot me for treadmill! But the show must go on, no matter what!
While we're on the topic, don't start me up on all those ladies in the gym and the step aerobics classes! Dem no dey tire!!! __________________ Nigerians in diaspora this, Nigerians in diaspora that.

| Re: How Good is Your Cardio? Miliki,
Apart from using the threadmill also watch your diet as in eating lots of fruits. I would recommend stuffs like paw paw and mango which are quite good in digesting protein food, whilst apples, pears etc are good for carbohydrates digestion. As we grow older, our digestive system slows down however, our food intake doesn't follow the same pattern. I suggest you eat fruits for lunch and lots of vegetables with your dinner.
Most important of all, you have to incorporate this into your lifestyle. Not something you do for a while and then stop. Being "working out" for over 2 decades (b4 then, i was as skinny as a pole and as such hated summer with a passion) and now i still boast a 6-pack (on a good day), all other times, 4-pack!
My cardio is above average even though i smoke (15-20 a day), which am in the process of giving up.Don't drink, except on special occasions. I eat whatever i like, esp. pounded yam with assorted meat and spinach!!
@ Ranter,
never mind not seeing your "nta nta" whilst standing up, as long as it's rises to attention when summoned, then all is well.............. |

| Re: How Good is Your Cardio? This is a fairly important issue that some of us have neglected. Because of high blood pressure issues, I've delved into it fairly deeply over the last two/three years. I'll share some of my thoughts sometime.
The quick summary is that there are lots of things we can do to stay in better health. I managed to stay in good shape walking 3 miles a day at a rapid pace - to some degree, running is overrated.

However, very brisk walking, especially on a good route, can be just as taxing as running without the negative impact on the joints. Walking is a far more natural motion and also a weight bearing exercise for the joints. I actually trained for a 10K run by walking briskly and for the most part, got decent results for someone with my weight/height.
So my take is that run if you need to run to meet certain athletic demands. If not, walking very briskly will more than meet the health goals of most people - you can get a very athletic pulse rate just by walking as fast as you can.
The other point is that some people start out jogging/running and give up when they can't perform to expectation. If they had started out walking and walked faster and faster and only started jogging when they felt they couldn't get a thrill from walking anymore, they would make more progress.

Good point. Should have stated that "running is overrated relative to other forms of exercise".
