Weight loss, is goal attainment, and like all goal attainment projects, It's only possible if you arm yourself with the right set of tools that give you the skill set, that'll make your goal attainment feasible.
These are usually
a) Information
b) self awareness
c) enabling environment
d) good reward strategy.

Foundation first
Whether its gunning for that promotion at work, or getting to learn a new language, or learning a new skill, One will need both consistency and motivation.

Whilst motivation may change from day to day...even minute to minute, since one could go from being motivated by the need to look, like the smokin' hot babe in those Victoria Secret lingerie ad, for your Tiger, one minute, to being able to run after and catch your irksome preteen the next.
However, Your commitment must absolutely never waver.

Once you understand that your motivation for weightloss can and will change constantly.
One also needs to take on board that one's Commitment to staying the course even after you have demolished a whole pallet of Ben&Jerry's. Or single handedly demolished an ant hill sized loaf of bread. Must be firm.

Step I (Information)
Keep a food dairy for at least one week. more if possible.
Information is power.
you cannot change what you do not know.
you may think its the bread, whilst unbeknownst to you, it could be the little bits of nuts, or other calorie dense nibbles, that you grab and not notice that is causing the gain.
to that end....log every single morsel that passes your lips.
So you can get a good idea of what you are eating.

Also note what time you eat, so you can devise a good strategy, for pre emptive action, so that you can head off hunger before it derails your well made plan.
Know Why you eat....Could you be an emotional eater and not know?
Personally, I love to commune with Ben & Jerrys when I am Tired, Hurt, Stressed or Miss my family when I am away from home.
Now that I know when I need my pals, I can address why I need them without resorting to numbing my feelings from unwanted/unwelcome emotions, by scoffing comfort food.

Step 2 (Self awareness....)
Know your eating personality.
What kind of eater are you....A portion distortioner?
a chop and clean mouth?....a peck peck peck all day long and announce I have hardly eaten today?
knowing your eating personality, will make your effort less stressful since you will then use your strenghts to achieve your goals.
Also know your trigger foods...its a waste of time telling yourself that you will only have a piece of something, when you know that in the decades since God put you on earth, you have never walked away from a packet of biscuits, unless its empty.
Pick your battles....There are times when only the warm comfort of a piece of freshly baked bread will do...in which case eat the Bread, savour every mouthful of it...and then pick yourself right off the ground and get back on the wagon....such is life.
Are you hungrier in the mornings or later in the day?
Do you find that its easier for you to eat lighter meals in the evening, and heavier ones earlier or vice versa?
Knowing these will enable you plan your meals accordingly and thus strategise as to what best works for you.

Step 3 (Enabling environment)....Have the kinds of food that will make your goal more attainable, and have less or non of those ones, that make temptation hard.
Create a support system and make yourself accountable.
Whether its Tiger, the kids, NVS or real life....make yourself accountable and you will find that it will make you weigh your options before you give in to temptations.
Remember if it aint there, you aint eating it...so make a realistic audit of the temptations you really need in your home and those you don't, so you can make your effort easier.

Step 4(Reward victories big and small.)
By this I don't mean celebrating losing a dress size by hitting the" All you can eat" buffet at Bellagio...it could be rewarding yourself with an extra long soak with that new bathsalt you have always wanted to try.
A new set of pretty lingerie,
A spa day, you can even make this more special, by having a masseuse come to the house and give you and Tiger one together. (Try it...its awesome)
or painting your toenails that pretty nail polish that makes you feel like Julia Roberts in pretty woman, and driving Tiger to distraction by waving them pretty feet at him.

The important thing is to acknowledge that your effort is paying off,no matter how small the victory...its the little ones that over time add up to the big ones.

Okaaay I need to get some work done...next Post, l'll post about the enjoyable part of the equation...Exercise.
whilst the eating part is about what you abstain or restrain yourself from, the Exercise part is about all the Fun things you get to do, and enjoy whilst on the journey.
And all the sexy pretty gear you get to wear doing it.
.

Thanks a million
I have my journal ready and will implement the writing down part definitely. That would help.
I am a snack-along person.
One piece of bread here, 10 ritz crackers here,2 handfuls of cashew nuts there and I know that needs to change.

Plus have you tried dieting according to your blood Group? The truth is bread might be good for your blood group. Some other foods might be responsible for the extra weight. Try to google it and see. It works too. What with the exercises you have started again, We should see latee ver 1.8 in a short while.
blood group dieting
na wa,I wonder how that works.

Shd we go back to swallow in the morning, afternoon and night again? that is what I was brought up with.

The key to staying healthy is never to get married, reason why Hollywood and recently Nollywood ladies do away with their men as fast as they can and even in some cases they do away with anything that could be associated with the man like changing name from J.Lo to Lola. Maybe NVS ladies could learn one or two things from these stars, and pray the men do not turn pedophiliac.

do I look fat?

Err...yes.

If that don't motivate you, then you might have to report to my lab here in the Vatican.

PS1> It wasn't sperm - unless you had been ingesting it orally - it is more likely contentment. So, we still put the blame on your hubby.

PS2> Pls, pls get off the bread - at least the white bread.

Nutrition value of semen

Q....How Many Calories in sperm?

A....The average ejaculate contains about 3-5mL of fluid, and is comprised of mostly sugars and various proteins. Overall, each ejaculate is between 5 and 7 calories.
There are 9 carlories in every 2 teaspoons.

I have never had a weight problem in my life and i hope to keep it that way. Used to want to gain weight so bad but now that I know better , I am thankful for the way God made me. I am a size 4 who sometimes wears a size 6 due to my hips being wider than a typical size 4. I have a small waist and very wide hips, so somewhere at the back of my mind, I know if I blow I go blow.........cos my hips are even wider than some of my friends wey don born pikins. I kind of have it at the back of my mind...when those pikins come my way, maybe I go blow.....hmmm

I suggest eating smart, you don't have cut out everything but you have to make a conscious effort. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, never eat past 7pm at night if you can help it. Cut out orange juice as much as you can, orange juice dey get sugar. Go easy on the bread, and eat good oils. Do not over do things.

A typical breakfast for me - Oatmeal and a boiled egg, low fat yogurt and grapes. Lots of water and my vitamins. I don't snack so that may be a plus. If you want to snack, baby carrots seem like a great choice.
I am not a rice person so I don't have carb problem but once in a while I eat rice. Eat lean meats like turkey, chicken and don't over do red meats. I love pineapples too. Make sure you eat fruits that will get your bowel moving like oranges..... if u still love orange juice, drink in moderation. I love corn too.

Sometimes, I do a fruit breakfast with grapes, pineapples, oranges with digestive yogurt. By the time I'm done, hunger no catch me again.

Or I do an omelet with loads of veggies (use minimum grease when frying) and a baked potato done in the microwave.

Stay way from sweets, they're bad and cause cavities. But once in a while wont hurt.

For lunch, you can buy a Rotisserie chicken and cut a piece to enjoy with salad. Do not over drench salad with salad dressing.

For dinner, you can eat a bit of rice with plenty vegetable....yes Efo riro is vegetable.. or mix your rice with mixed vegetables. Sometimes, I buy those 97cents california veggie mix from walmart........full of brocolli, cauliflower and carrots......I just steam them and add kosher salt and cracked black pepper....... with rice..

Take walks, keep your body active and stop blaming the sperm .

High protein, low carb diet is ideal..........., increase cardio........ get moving and you'll see a difference.

If you still want to eat your naija foods, do so but do so in moderation. No eba or fufu I eat is bigger than my fist size. I just can't do more than that. Bake your meats rather than fry them. Spray them with Pam and they'll be as good as fried.

Let fruits and veggies be your new best foods. Oh, do whole grain breads instead of that white stuff. Check the nutritional content of the foods you buy.

Don't focus too much on losing weight rather let it be on living healthy and you'll see the difference.

One other thing............if you are on Birth control, it may account for weight gain. Like Lilo said, keep a food diary........

Lil'ms'gadg,
You know nothing can come between our horizontal tango, have no fear for while the gut brings tears to my eyes, it is only because the rest of the body is Adonis-esque (and can hold it in for as long as i have to eg when swimming).
Besides there are situations when length does matter (if you get my meaning)
Finally being a disciple of Abami Eda i follow his exhortation - 'na from back' (as in the song "if them want to run the running, na from back e ooo, na from back. if them want to knock your head, na from back e ooo, na from back, if them want to do the do, na from back e ooo, na from back etc etc)

Oga Ranter you lucky for that ya side o!, for this side wey i dey all these virgin people* no dey ever do BOGOF with beer, but god dey sha, at least man still fit organise himself no matter the damage

SNB...what a fantastic write up.
With your kind permision, I want to print and keep this.
I am a saint or sinner kind of eater, and because I am a runner, I am able to keep my weight in check.
My Oga hates swallow, so does my son. so I am the only one, who falls ontop of pounded yam as if dem take am do me...then I resolve to behave... and I swing to the other extreme and abstain for months...only to do it all over again.
What I need is moderation..Especially in my non training months, when my skirts start straining over my hips. and my tush, seems to sing a song all its own.
I have no doubt that without my running, I will be the size of a triple-wide trailer.

I am going to implement this tennis ball size for the dough (eba etc)part.
When I am training I actually count all the macros in my nutrition.
Protein grams per day...carb...fat...etc
but since I use the periodisation method of training...when I am tapering...I eat like a champion sumo wrestler...no kidding, and I pay the price in a more hippy look...quite sexy though. but makes peak fitness harder to achieve.

Lilo, I got the diet thing under control but now I am looking to be motivated to do some real exercise. I don't want to end up with Oprah arms......... I want a firm and toned body.... I want to look as good as Michelle O when I get to her age. I am still open to new food ideas sha.....

Maybe my hair has a lot to do with it. Remember one time Mswoman talked about how her hair looked after a work out...been there too.....so I decided to stick to braids for a while. But now I don taya....but will eventually go back to braids...seems like a sensible option if I really want to exercise.

.so maybe my new love for yoga will help.....that stuff ain't easy at all. I'm sure if I do it long enough, I'll reap some fantastic benefits. So how does one go about exercising right to that point of training/ running like you? Girl what's your secret?

I also heard that running too much are hard on the knees. Is this true? I don't want any knee replacements at all.. Anyway, let's continue to share ideas....

Wash your mind with carbolic soap You.
You know exactly what I meant....is that he's not a fan of Eba,Pounded yam, plantain flour, farina, fufu, ati bee bee lo.
moreover men have nothing to swallow....unless they are as bent as a ninebob note.
Originally Posted by Serious_Naijababe View Post

Yes Oo, Anecdotal evidence abounds, to the effect that its very very bad for the lower limb joints, especially the hip and knees.
I guess especially so, if one has family history of arthritis...Like I do.
My Grandma and My Mum all have very crippling arthritic knees...My mum has refused to have her knees replaced, and would rather hobble around with a stick at 69yrs old....you dey mine me?
I wanted to stop when I turned 40...I didn't. I just find other exercises too confining, and inefficient.....But stop I must do very soon. I don't want to be in the kind of pain and immobility, I have seen her endure.
My problem is that, I love competing against myself, which is what running lets me do. It allows me to keep pushing my limits, in many ways, which gives me the confidence to step outside my comfort zone, more so outside fitness oriented goals.
I guess I still believe I have a couple of years, to think of other ways to stay fit.
Yoga. You say...? Please let us know how you get on with it.....I am open to trying new things, and I have heard only good things about its effect on mind/body wellness, flexibility and balance.
