Corruption is as old as Nigeria and has attained institutional status. Political office holders are in office only to despoil the treasury and not for public service. For over three decades of Nigeria's 46 years of independence she was under one totalitarian regime or another. During those years, due process and the rule of law were foreign to our homeland. I daresay that the present crop of leaders do not understand probity and integrity in service. Many western nations were once victims of this regrettable Nigerian experience but through collective will engaged their oppressive rulers believing that the liberty of man was worth dying for. Classical examples are France, Czechoslovakia, Russia, and Hungary. In my opinion, the Nigerian people are not ready for a velvet revolution, so why should their leaders (oppressors) care. Don't be surprised that the alleged corrupt politicians will receive royal treatment instead of prosecution and possibly jail terms. The hands of the powers that be in Nigeria are all soiled with ill-gotten wealth. It is not yet uhuru (apologies to Oginga Odinga).
