Sir: We learnt with deep sorrow the death of seven Nigerian soldiers on peace-keeping operation in the Darfur region of Sudan. I wish to convey the sincere condolences of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to you and, through you, to the entire service and families of the deceased.
Their death is a great loss not only to the Nigerian Army and nation, but also to Africa as a whole since they were on active duty in the service of the people of the continent. We must all take consolation in the fact that they died for the cause of peace and liberation.
At this trying moment, our hearts are with you and with the families of Lance Corporal Danjuma Madaki, Lance Corporal Usman Saleh, Private Duniya Audu, Private Samuel Orokpo, Private Bala Mohammed, Private John Dogara and Trooper Toyin Alao.
We pray Allah SWT to grant their souls blissful repose in Aljanah Fidausi. We also pray Almighty God to grant their colleagues and families the fortitude to bear the great loss. We pray as well for God's continuing protection over their colleagues in the AU-UN hybrid force in Sudan.
We in the NLC regard the assignment of the Nigerian Armed Forces in the AU-UN Mission as an important one. Bringing peace to the Darfur region and ending the racist genocide and mayhem unleashed on African people is a fundamental continental challenge.
We take advantage of this unfortunate occasion to call on the military authorities to provide the officers and men involved in the Darfur mission all the means to effectively protect themselves and discharge their assignment successfully. Once again, accept our sympathy and the assurances of our highest esteem. May their souls rest in peace, Amen.
Abdulwahed Omar,
President,
For and on behalf of the Nigeria Labour Congress
