| Re: What Does the World Owe Africa? I understand Sabella's sentiments - they've been expressed by various other writers for some years now, and it's all beginning to sound a bit old hat to me. I agree with those who say we should stop demanding "the West" and "the developed world" should right the wrongs done to us...
That said, it's not actually the gist of the article, but it's implied by the title (so maybe Sabella should consider re-titling it).
I beg to disagree with some of the sactions recommended - a blanket ban on public officials' (and family, friends, casual acquaintances, anyone who managed to get oga's signature on their papers... haba!) access to healthcare and educational opportunities abroad is not right. Everyone (except Mugabe and Idi Amin, etc.) has a right to medical treatment and educational opportunities where they can afford it. Even prisoners get medical treatment (except in Naija).
A better proposal may be to get those officials to pay for treatment abroad themselves... but then, while "in service to the nation", the nation is expected to take care of them, so where does that leave us? We've to clean up our house ourselves.
Final word - article's too wordy. Naija, eschew profundity (a-ha!). My eyes glaze over whenever I come across more than two words with 4 - 5 syllables in one sentence. Biko. Ejo. Du'Allah.
