The explanation given as to the cause of Mr Oguntunwase is not tenable. A patient who has an alleged mental illness should not have to die on a psych unit. If anything, a psychiatric unit is the safest place for a person presenting with psychotic symptoms. Properly trained professionals should have been able to use medications and passive restraint to keep Mr Oguntunwase from harming himself or harming other people. I don't know much about how much lack of professionalism and/or racism played into how this young man was treated. What I know is another Nigerian has met an untimely death in a foreign land under mysterious circumstances. How many more of these forced exiles will die sudden, lonely and violent deaths away from home?
