Floodlight Failure Disrupts U-17 World Cup Match Between Spain And USA

The FIFA Under-17 World Cup Group E match between Spain and the USA at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano on Monday night was disrupted twice due to floodlight failure.

Hungarian referee Viktor Kassai was forced to first halt proceedings for about five minutes around the 52nd minute of the encounter when one of the floodlights went off. He was forced to do so again in the 65th minute when the lights at the other end of the pitch failed.

Besides these stoppages, this game, watched by an impressive crowd of 19,500 fans, produced several highlights.

Spanish defender Sergei Gomez was sent off in the second minute and just moments later the USA took the lead through leading scorer Jack McInerney.

The USA's lead did not last long though as Spain hit back in the 22nd minute through Borja and on the half hour mark, Pablo Sarabia notched the match winner for the Spaniards.

Courtesy of their 2-0 win over Malawi earlier Monday, United Arab Emirates top Group E, while Spain are second in the standings.

In Group F, Algeria lost 1-0 to Italy to complete a miserable opening round of matches for African teams at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup. Save for hosts Nigeria, who salvaged a point against Germany, Africa's four other representatives have thus far lost their opening matches at this championship.

Italy's winner was netted by Fredico Carraro in the 78th minute and Algeria, who are making their debut in this competition, must blame poor finishing for this loss as they created several chances but could not put away any of them.

South Korea lead this group based in Kaduna after their 3-1 victory over Uruguay, also on Monday.

Netherlands - Iran [17 World Cup].

Netherlands - Iran [17 World Cup].

This thread is located at http://www.myp2pforum.eu/saturday/45...world-cup.html

Here is the message that has just been posted:

Game Link(s): MyP2P.eu :: Fifa U17 World Cup Nigeria 2009 - Netherlands vs. Iran (http://www.myp2p.eu/broadcast.php?ma...88&part=sports)

The Netherlands and Iran meet in Enugu on Saturday 31 October in their final Group C contest firm in the knowledge that a win would definitely take them through to the knockout stages of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Nigeria 2009. The Dutch, after dropping their opener, got back on track with a win over Gambia, while the Iranians have yet to lose and have four points from a win and a draw.

*The game*
Netherlands - Iran, Enugu, 31 October, 16:00 (local time)

*The stakes*
A win for either side on Saturday would ensure them a place in the knockout stages. The Dutch looked much improved in their last match, a 2-1 win over Gambia, after a squalid performance in their opening-day loss to Colombia. Arsenal man Oguzhan Ozyakup has been pulling the strings brilliantly in midfield, but he will need a bit of help in this final group match if the Netherlands - runners-up in European qualifying - hope to make a run deep into these finals in Nigeria.

Iran, for their part, began the tournament with a fine 2-0 win over the Gambians but fell off the pace a bit in their 0-0 draw with Colombia. Their danger men - Payam Sadeghian and Afshin Esmaeil - will need to recapture their free-flowing form if they want to be sure of booking passage to the all-important second round.

*The stat*
2-1 - The only scoreline that the Dutch have known here in Nigeria, losing their opener 2-1 to the Colombians in Calabar and winning by the same score in their last outing against Gambia.

*The words*
"The Iranians are a strong team, and we will prepare fully to give the best possible performance we can against them. After losing our first game against Colombia we gave much better account of ourselves, and created more chances, against Gambia. Still, though, we can improve and we will try to be at our best in our final group game." Albert Stuivenberg, Netherlands coach

"We now have four points, and a win in our last game will be enough to see us through to the second round. This was our primary objective when we came here to Nigeria, so we are hoping to achieve it with a good showing in our last game. We want to at least be one of the top three finishers here, so this is the first step to getting there." Ali Doustimehr, Iran coach

Brazil Coach disappointed, threatened to quit

He is disappointed that he has to wait on other group results to determine his team's fate in the ongoing FIFA U-17 World Cup. Now, he is contemplating quitting international coaching.

Brazil beat Japan but lost to Mexico and Switzerland in the group matches.

While resigning to fate in the competition the soccer tactician told PANA that it was time he called it quits with international coaching because of the stress and demands which had put a lot of pressure on him while handling national team assignments in Brazil for the past 22 years.

Nizzo said the results of his team's matches so far in the Nigeria 2009 U-17 World Cup had not reflected its intensive and adequate preparations.

He was not even ready to accept the fact that his team could still qualify as the best team from their group saying that Brazil as a football country deserved better results.

'We played good game in all our previous matches and today we were better but we were unlucky not to have converted the numerous chances we had in the game.

'We were not thinking of moving to the next round as third best but we had high hopes of topping the group or at least emerging second best to qualify to the next round. But now I think after helping these kids and Brazilian national teams for 22 years not, it is time to go and rest.

'May be I could join a club side to continue to impart the football knowledge on young players, but definitely I have had it all with international coaching business,' Nizzo said after his team's 0-1 loss to Switzerland on Friday.
Sorry, Coach. Bitter rock next tyme.

Different strokes for different coaches. While Brazil's coach is thinking of throwing in the towel, Honduras Coach is looking ahead.

Honduras Head Coach, Eugenio Umanzor, however, tried to hide his disappointment of not moving ahead in the competition but said he was happy that he had learnt a lot in the competition which would also help his team as it graduates to the next level.

He stated that he was unlucky to have been grouped in a tough zone which comprised of football powers like the defending champion and host nation, Nigeria, Argentina and European champion, Germany.

'We came into this game with the ambition of beating Germany to have a chance of being picked for the next round but we could not do that. But I am happy that we played against strong teams and my team was not disgraced in the competition.

But I also feel bad that we did not qualify for the next round,' Umanzor said after his team's 1-3 loss to Germany.

He, however, disclosed that Honduras could have booked a second round ticket if they had been in a relatively easy group. He also predicted that U-17 that the World Cup would be won by either of the three teams in his group - Nigeria, Argentina or Germany.

Umanzor also promised to keep the team together for the future because 'the boys would be great in future if they are been kept together. They are good ball jugglers who would be great in future'.

He said that he had benefited so much as a coach from this World Cup which would make him a better coach in his chosen profession.

o boy what a marvel the Golden Eaglets are to wtch. I saw them against New Zealand today in the quarter finals, and they were ever so dorminant. imagine Possession was 70 - 30 in favour of the Eaglets. In the first 28 minutes they were 3 goals up, and Emmanuel Sani came in in the Second half, and within 5 minites he had scored two more goals. The other chap was just as effective in his contribution to the game (Kayode), and had a couple of near misses. Congrats boys, and goodluck in the semis in Lagos.

Abeg we still get quarter finals in Calabar before any semi in Lagos. Hope we have fair weather against SK as we had against NZ.

This crop of Golden Eaglets remind me of the 1985 set which won the maiden event. Everyone is capable of scoring in the team, and so its more of ateam effort, and collective ability. Goodluck to them in the Semi finals.

Important Info:

These sets of Eaglets are record breakers already.

First host team to reach even the Quarter finals

Highest goal scorers so far with 14 goals

The team with lowest caution so far - 1 yellow to Okoro for what referee considered diving.

Now to the ultimate!! The first team to win the championship back to back. It is possible. Go for it boys. God and good Nigerians are with you.

....and so to Abuja we congregate on sunday, to watch our Golden Eaglets take on Switzerland in the Fifa World Cup U 17 finals. This almost heels pains i suffered when the underachieving U 20 dropped out in the group stages of the U 20 version held 10 years ago, as well as the recent non performance at the same age group tournament by the fltying eagles in Egypt. I feel good with this bunch, and i have no doubt they have what it takes to win and retain the cup. That Sani Emmanuel is some player. In fact the whole team is awesome the way they play, and to think they were put together hurridly, with little time to prepare? Siasia has no excuse whatsoever for the shoddy job in Egypt.
